The NBA world was taken aback when ESPN reporter Shams Charania dropped a bombshell on Saturday, suggesting that the Dallas Mavericks traded Luka Doncic to the LA Lakers for Anthony Davis and a couple of more.
The deal will get the Lakers Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris, as per Charania. However, all rumors turned real when the Lakers released an official statement confirming the deal. The statement read, “The Los Angeles Lakers have acquired five-time First Team All-NBA guard Luka Dončić, forward/center Maxi Kleber and forward/center Markieff Morris from the Dallas Mavericks in a three-team trade.”
The 25-year-old, who is currently out of action with a calf injury, maintains an average of 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 7.8 assists per game in 22 fixtures this season. Doncic shared his reaction, bidding farewell to Dallas fans’ in an emotional message and it seems that he is having a difficult to accept that he is no longer a Maverick.
A deal of such magnitude left several NBA stars including Joel Embiid, Tyler Herro, Kevin Durant, and others shocked. Lakers legend Magic Johnson also had something to say. The NBA legend took to social media to take an accidental jab at Doncic, while talking about the positive impact icon LeBron James will have on his mentality, including conditioning.
In a social media post on X, Johnson wrote, “Luka Doncic will definitely make the Lakers a championship-contending team. He’ll take pressure off of LeBron because of his scoring ability and playmaking and will make every Laker better!”
“LeBron James will be a positive influence on Luka, teaching him his championship mentality that includes taking his conditioning seriously,” he commented.

In another post, the Hall of Famer praised the trade, labelling it the biggest move he has seen in his 45 years of association with the NBA.
“I’ve been associated with the NBA for 45 years and this Luka and AD trade is the biggest trade I’ve seen between two superstars essentially in their prime!”
“With Luka, the Lakers are getting a 25 year old superstar; this is a great long-term move for the Lakers franchise after LeBron retires,” he suggested.
As Johnson shared his thoughts on the trade, he didn’t forget to highlight the contributions Anthony Davis made for the side. Magic thanked Davis for helping the Lakers in big wins including a championship in 2020.
“Laker Nation, we have to thank AD for his five and a half seasons including a championship in 2020,” Magic tweeted.
“AD was having an MVP season which will make Dallas better, and he can go back to his natural position of playing the 4,” he added.
Anthony, who missed two games for the Lakers due to abdominal pain, is averaging at 25.7 points, 11.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game this season.
