On Sunday, the Lakers and Mavericks officially announced the blockbuster trade.
The NBA world has still not recovered from Saturday night’s bombshell trade which saw Dallas Mavericks trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick.
A lot has happened since then. Doncic has unfollowed Dallas Mavericks on Instagram. Mavs GM Nico Harrison later revealed that he sent a text and voicemail to the star player, but as of now, Luka has yet to respond.
On Sunday, the Lakers confirmed the blockbuster trade. In a press release, Lakers GM Rob Pelinka thanked Anthony Davis for his contributions and also welcomed the arrival of Luka Doncic.

“We are overwhelmingly thankful for AD’s six seasons with the Lakers, where he led our franchise to a championship and cemented himself as a perennial NBA All-Star,” said Pelinka.
“But now, it’s about the future. Luka is a one-of-a-kind, young global superstar who will lead this franchise for years to come.”

Pelinka emphasized that the Lakers are ready to build a roster that complements Luka’s skill set and vision, adding that coach JJ Redick would play a key role in shaping the team’s future around their new centerpiece.
“We will be relentless in building a roster around the on-court vision Coach Redick has for this basketball team and there is an unwavering commitment to that work to serve our loyal and dedicated fans. We are grateful for today and look forward to what’s next”, Pelinka said in the release.
Now that the deal is official, fans are already buzzing about what jersey number Luka Doncic will wear in L.A. The Lakers have confirmed that Luka will sport No. 77 with the team, marking a historic first for the franchise.
Doncic’s No. 77 is iconic to his career, as he has worn the number since his time in Europe and with the Mavericks.
During a press conference in July 2021, Luka Doncic shared the inspiration behind his jersey number. He explained that Greek basketball legend Vassilis Spanoulis was the main reason for his choice. “Spanoulis has been my idol since I was a kid. I grew up watching him,” Doncic had revealed, according to EuroHoops.
