Fox spent his entire career with the team in the California capital, averaging 21.5 points and 6.1 assists over eight seasons.
Another major move has been made in the NBA. Point guard De’Aaron Fox has been traded to the San Antonio Spurs in a deal that involved three teams and also sent Zach LaVine from the Chicago Bulls to the Sacramento Kings. The information comes from Shams Charania of ESPN on Sunday (February 2).
In addition to Fox, the Spurs received point guard Jordan McLaughlin in the trade. The Kings acquired LaVine, Sidy Cissoko, three first-round draft picks (2025, 2027, 2031), and three second-round picks (2025 and two in 2028). The Bulls received Zach Collins, Tre Jones, Kevin Huerter, and their own 2025 first-round pick, which had previously been with the Kings.

The 27-year-old Fox still had two years left on his contract with the Kings, but he had been contemplating a future away from the franchise. In December, Sam Amick and Anthony Slater from The Athletic reported that Sacramento was in a “dangerous zone” with the player.
Fox’s agent, Rich Paul, had met with the team’s front office to discuss the next steps in his career. While no official trade request was made, the reporters emphasized that the likelihood of Fox rejecting an extension to his contract was growing, especially due to the front office’s struggles in building a promising roster.

Thus, a trade became the best solution for the Kings to get a return for the player they selected with the fifth overall pick in the 2017 Draft. Fox spent his entire career with the team in the California capital, averaging 21.5 points and 6.1 assists over eight seasons. His best year came in 2022-23, when he was named an All-Star, earned All-NBA honors, and led Sacramento to the playoffs.
Now, De’Aaron Fox will join veteran Chris Paul and rising star Victor Wembanyama in San Antonio. He will enter negotiations and could sign an extension with the team in August.
LaVine, for his part, had been among the players rumored to be moving before the trade deadline, which ends on Thursday (February 6). He has been having a great season, averaging 24 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.5 assists, but his high salary of $46 million (including a $49 million player option for 2026-27) and injury history made a move for the player attractive to the Bulls. In Sacramento, the forward will reunite with DeMar DeRozan, with whom he previously teamed up in Chicago.
