Kylian Mbappe Wins Major Legal Battle After Explosive PSG Dispute, to be Paid Over €61 Million

Kylian Mbappe and his long-running legal battle with Paris Saint-Germain has reached a verdict. A ruling was made by a Paris labour court which has ordered PSG to settle unpaid financial obligations owed to their former star following a public dispute between the club and the player.

Their relationship soured in the final months of his contract. The case centred on wages and bonuses that were withheld during the closing stages of Mbappe’s time in Paris. It was shortly before his high-profile move to Real Madrid in the summer of 2024.

The French forward had initially pursued a significantly larger claim. But the court ultimately focused on payments linked to the final three months of his contract and additional bonuses included in his deal. The total sum awarded to Mbappe exceeds €60 million.

Court Sides With Kylian Mbappe

Judges ruled that PSG failed to pay Mbappe his salary for April, May and June 2024. That, along with contractual ethics and signing bonuses. A large portion of the amount is understood to be bonus-related rather than basic wages. The decision also dismissed PSG’s extensive counterclaim.

They alleged financial damage stemming from Mbappe’s departure on a free transfer. Mbappe’s legal team welcomed the outcome. They stressed the wider implications beyond the player’s personal case. His legal team told the Athletic, “This ruling confirms that commitments entered into must be honoured. It restores a simple truth.”

They added, “Even in the professional football industry, employment law applies to everyone.” However, the court rejected several additional claims from Mbappe’s camp including allegations related to reputational harm and workplace harassment. Even so, the core judgment reinforced the obligation of clubs to honour contractual payments, regardless of disputes surrounding renewals or transfers.

Mbappe-PSG: Relationship That Turned Sour

The conflict traces back to Mbappe’s decision not to extend his contract beyond 2024. It was a move that deprived PSG of a potential transfer fee after years of heavy investment. The club argued that a verbal understanding was reached in 2023 that would leave them financially protected if he left for free.

It’s a claim that Mbappe’s representatives constantly denied. They insisted no such agreement was ever proven. Tensions escalated when Mbappe was excluded from pre-season plans and later reinstated. Both sides accused each other of acting in bad faith.

PSG also sought damages linked to a failed transfer to Saudi Arabia and what they described as a loss of opportunity. In response to the verdict, PSG released a statement saying, “Paris Saint-Germain takes note of the judgment pronounced by the Paris labour court, which it will execute, while reserving the right to appeal.”
