Chelsea’s progression into the EFL Cup semi-finals came with an unexpected subplot. Estevao Willian was expected to play but was nowhere to be seen during the win over Cardiff City. The Blues eventually pulled clear in the second half.
But the absence of the teenage winger immediately raised questions. Especially given his growing importance under Enzo Maresca. The 18-year-old had been involved for limited minutes in recent outings. But was tipped to play in this game.

So, his omission from the matchday squad has been all the more noticeable. Instead, Chelsea leaned on their bench depth. Late contributions swung the tie decisively in their favour in South Wales. Then, attention quickly shifted from the scoreline to concerns surrounding Estevao.
Speaking after the match, Maresca confirmed that Estevao’s absence was not tactical. The Chelsea head coach explained that the youngster had picked up a muscle issue that ruled him out of the Cardiff clash. He also informed that it will also keep him sidelined for the upcoming league fixture. Speaking after the match, Maresca said:

“He had a small problem, a muscle problem. He won’t be available for Newcastle, and we will see for the next one.” The decision was made with caution in mind. Especially given the physical demands Estevao has faced since arriving in Europe. The injury has been described as minor. But Chelsea staff were unwilling to take risks.
Despite his age, the winger has already logged a significant number of appearances across club and international football in 2025. His transition from Palmeiras to Chelsea followed an already demanding schedule. However, his minutes have been carefully managed in recent weeks.

Before missing the Cardiff tie, his most recent appearance came as a brief cameo against Everton. Even so, his influence this season has been clear. He has contributed to goals and energy whenever called upon. That impact made his absence stand out. Especially on a night when Chelsea initially struggled to break down stubborn opposition.
The injury now rules him out of the trip to Newcastle this weekend for their Premier League fixture. There is still some optimism internally that the setback will not keep him sidelined for long. The short break in Chelsea’s schedule following the weekend fixture should aid his recovery and allow him to return refreshed.
