Kostas Tsimikas Joins Roma on Loan Amid Long-Term Liverpool Deal

Ritam Dey

Liverpool full-back Kostas Tsimikas has completed a season-long loan move to AS Roma, the clubs confirmed on Friday. The deal sees the 29-year-old head to Serie A for the 2025/26 campaign, with Roma covering his wages but no option included to make the move permanent.

A long-term Liverpool contract, but a temporary exit

Tsimikas’ loan comes less than two years after he committed his long-term future to Liverpool. The Greece international signed a new deal at Anfield in 2023, keeping him tied to the club until the summer of 2027. That contract extension underlined the Reds’ faith in him as a valuable squad option, even if he was not a regular starter ahead of first-choice left-back Andy Robertson.

However, Liverpool’s summer signing of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth shifted the dynamic in the squad. With the 21-year-old Hungarian viewed as a long-term option in the position, Tsimikas’ chances of consistent minutes were set to diminish, prompting the club to seek an exit solution. While a permanent transfer was the preferred option, no suitable bids materialised, leading to the loan arrangement with Roma being finalised late in the transfer window.

Success at Anfield before Italian challenge for Tsimikas

Since joining Liverpool from Olympiacos in 2020 for £12 million, Tsimikas has made 115 appearances across all competitions. He became a cult hero for Reds fans after scoring the decisive penalty in the 2022 FA Cup final shootout against Chelsea. His honours with the club include the Premier League, the FA Cup, and two Carabao Cup triumphs.

The move to Roma offers Tsimikas regular first-team opportunities in one of Europe’s top leagues, while his long-term future remains secured at Anfield. Roma, under Gian Piero Gasperini, have started the season strongly with two league wins and are also competing in the Europa League.

For Liverpool, the deal keeps Tsimikas under contract until 2027, maintaining his transfer value and ensuring flexibility for the club to revisit his role at the end of the season.
