Josh McDaniels Has Returned As Offensive Coordinator For The New England Patriots!

Before we talk about Josh McDaniels’ coaching career, let’s go back in time and see how he performed as a player. No, McDaniels never played in the NFL but he did play some college ball before deciding to stick with coaching.

He attended John Carroll University where he mostly played as a wide receiver from 1995 to 1998. McDaniels played alongside many former/current players, executives, managers, and coaches. This includes London Fletcher, Nick Caserio, Brian Polian, and Jerry Schuplinski to name a few.

After spending three years as a player, he decided to give coaching a try and joined Nick Saban as a senior graduate assistant at Michigan State University. Thus began his coaching career and he has served various teams throughout the NFL. He spent majority of his time with the New England Patriots but he also coached three other teams including; Las Vegas Raiders, Denver Broncos, St. Louis Rams.

McDaniels found majority of his success while serving the New England Patriots. However, serving as a head coach, was something where he just could not find much success in. McDaniels was the head coach for the Denver Broncos for 2009 and 2010 season. In those two seasons, McDaniels led the team to a 11-17 record. He was fired after week 13 in 2010.

Similarly in 2022 and 2023 season, McDaniels coached the Las Vegas Raiders and led them to a 9-16 record. He was, yet again, fired after week 8. But now, McDaniels has returned to the New England Patriots.

McDaniels has returned to the New England Patriots as an offensive coordinator. Mike Vrabel will now have McDaniels run the offense which is led by quarterback Drake Maye. This will be the third time that McDaniels will serve the Patriots. This decision has left many fans ecstatic as McDaniels was part of the Tom Brady led Patriots dynasty.

What does McDaniels record look like as an Offensive Coordinator for the Patriots?

Even though Josh McDaniels did not find success as a head coach, his stint with the Patriots is a different story. McDaniels is a 6-time champ while he served the New England Patriots. His roles was changed many times working for the Patriots.

He served as a personnel assistant in 2001, defensive assistant in 2002/2003, quarterback coach in 2004/2005, and as a offensive Coordinator and quarterback coach from 2006-2008.

He ran some of the most prolific offenses in the 2010s and set multiple records in 2007 as an OC including: 75 touchdowns and scoring 589 points. He also won three titles with the Patriots in his first stint before he took the head coaching job for the Broncos.

McDaniels rejoined the Patriots in 2011 and went on to win three more Superbowls with the Patriots. Only this time, McDaniels won his 3 Superbowls as an offensive coordinator for the team. He stayed with the Patriots until the 2021 season before joining the Las Vegas Raiders as the headcoach.

Now is he back where he started and this has certainly brought excitement to the Patriots’ fans once again.
