Jordan Love Injury Update – How Serious Is the Thumb Injury Love Sustained in Preseason Game?

Devavrat Kulkarni

Jordan Love is expected to make a full recovery soon

The NFL preseason is all about getting ready for the grind of the 17-week regular season and potentially the postseason after that. And even though the results of these games are not counted, that doesn’t mean things are to be taken lightly.

Every team has multiple backups and fringe roster players looking to prove their worth so as to be able to make the final cut for the 53-man roster. The intensity is hard, and the plays are still tough. Thus, injuries can and do occur all the time, even in preseason matchups.

That brings us to the Green Bay Packers and their starting quarterback Jordan Love, who sustained a thumb injury during their week 1 preseason game against the New York Jets.

Jordan Love Injury Update

In an unfortunate situation, Packers starting quarterback Jordan Love sustained a thumb injury in Green Bay’s week 1 preseason game against the Jets while trying to execute the final play of his series of snaps.

Contrary to what was initially perceived to be more than a minor scare, Love’s injury is not that severe. In fact, the Packers’ starting quarterback has suffered a ligament tear and will require minor surgery. It is suspected that during the play, when he got injured, Love’s hand got caught in one of the opponent’s helmets, resulting in a ligament tear.

The good news is that the injury has taken place on the thumb of his right hand, which is his non-throwing hand, and the 26-year-old is expected to make his return as early as next week. Packers’ general manager, Brian Gutekunst, also said that the team expects him to be fully healthy and ready to go for the season opener against the Detroit Lions on September 7.

“I think as he gets back, we’ll kind of assess where he’s at. It’s one of those things where I think he’ll be back at practice next week. More importantly, he’ll be ready for Week 1, and that’s the most important thing.”

The fact that Love should be more than ready to go for week 1 is certainly a positive sign for the Packers. The veteran will be entering his sixth season in the league and third as the starting quarterback. Green Bay has been knocking on the door of a deep run in the postseason of late, and Love remaining healthy throughout the season will be a key factor in that sense.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
