Jonathan Kuminga Shares Insights on His Relationship With Steve Kerr, Credits Him for His Growth in Career

Kuminga averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists in the 2024-25 season.

Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga shared insights on his relationship with head coach Steve Kerr. He was speaking during his exit interview, where he talked about the kind of relationship he shares with Kerr. Kuminga revealed that while both of them have had their ups and downs, Kerr helped him get where he is today. Notably, the Warriors were knocked out of the NBA 2025 Championship contention following a 4-1 conference semifinals loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The 22-year-old, on the other hand, is set to become a restricted free agent this summer. Sharing details of his bond with the Warriors’ head coach, Kuminga said, “I mean since I’ve been here, we have had ups and downs, but he helped me to get here. And we had a lot of great moments. So, I think our relationship has been very good.”

Notably, Kerr benched Kuminga near the end of the regular season and the beginning of the playoffs. However, the youngster started to get more time on the court following the injuries of Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler. He missed a chunk of games this season due to an ankle injury and saw his playing time get reduced following the trade of Butler from the Miami Heat.

Having played 47 regular season games in 2024-25, the Congolese averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists. He was shooting 45.4% from the field, 66.8% from the foul line and 30.5% from the three-point range.

Jonathan Kuminga Provides Vague Outlook For His Future With the Warriors

Kuminga is set to become a restricted free agent this summer, and he has the option to either re-sign with the seven-time champions or sign a deal with some other team. If he decides to sign with another team, the Dubs will have two days to match the deal or let him walk away. Talking about the same, he revealed that there is still uncertainty regarding his future in the franchise as well as the league.

Kuminga told reporters, “I don’t know. I don’t know what to tell you. I figure, I don’t know, but you know — I don’t know. Still got to figure it out. Just finished playing one day ago. So I don’t really — I haven’t think about anything yet.”

As mentioned, he was on bench following his return from the injury layoff. However, Kerr gave him more time on court after Stephen Curry injured his hamstring in Round 2 of the playoffs. In the last four games, he was averaging 23.4 points while shooting 55.4% from the field and 38.9% from the three-point arc.
