Jonathan Kuminga Injury: Latest update on Warriors young star’s potential return

Recent update indicates that 22-year-old may return sooner.

Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga has been on the sidelines due to a right ankle sprain he sustained in team’s win over the Memphis Grizzlies on January 4.

The injury occurred when Kuminga tried to block a shot and landed awkwardly on the feet of two Grizzlies players. Despite the injury, he scored 13 points in just 15 minutes of play before leaving the game.

Initially, it was expected that Kuminga would miss three weeks. However, recent update indicates that 22-year-old may return sooner.

According to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, Kuminga has been walking without his walking boot, which he had worn throughout the team’s recent games.

“Of note: Jonathan Kuminga has ditched the walking boot tonight, had been wearing it the entire road trip. Still in the middle stages of his return from a significant ankle sprain, but he’s advancing,” Slater reported.

The Warriors, currently 21-19 and sitting 11th in the Western Conference, have been keeping an eye on Kuminga’s return. Kuminga has been Warriors’ second-leading scorer behind Stephen Curry, averaging 16.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.2 assists.

Despite stepping up for the Warriors this season, Kuminga has been included in trade rumors since November. He is eligible for restricted free agency this summer, and there has been no developments in contract extension.

However, Golden State’s struggles this season has reportedly Steve Kerr and the front office hesitant to trade him, even as they explore other options in the trade market. According to HoopsHype, the Warriors are focused on giving their veteran stars, Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, another chance to compete for a championship, but they are not willing to trade away their future just to keep in title hunt this season.
