Who Are Johni Broome’s Parents? A Look at the Family Behind the New 76ers Forward

Rudra Dubey

Inside the Broome Family: The People Who Shaped Johni’s Journey

Johni Broome, a former basketball forward at Morehead State and Auburn, was a standout at Tampa Catholic High School. Broome was selected 35th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2025 NBA draft. He averaged 19.6 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks as a senior, earning Hillsborough County Player of the Year. At Morehead State, Broome quickly rose, winning OVC Freshman of the Year, Tournament MVP, and Defensive Player of the Year, while earning back-to-back First-Team All-OVC honors.

After transferring to Auburn in 2022, he elevated his game further. As a senior, he averaged 18.6 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 2.9 assists, racking up major accolades: Sporting News Player of the Year, SEC Player of the Year, Karl Malone Award, and Consensus First-Team All-American. He also earned All-SEC honors in both 2024 and 2025.

Who are Johni Broome’s parents?

Johni Broome was born on July 19, 2002, to parents John and Julie Broome. He is the youngest of three siblings. His older brother, John Jr., played college football as a defensive end for Florida International University, while his older sister, Jade’a, tends to stay out of the public eye, with little information available about her.

About his family, Johni stated to The Athletic, “My family deserves a lot of credit for everything.” The Broomes refer to themselves as “the J.A.B. Five” because they all share the same initials.

Who is Johni Broome’s mother?

Johni Broome’s mother is Julie Broome. Sporting News reports that she was a coach at Jacksonville State University in Alabama and a former professional basketball player in Germany. Johni stands at 6 feet 10 inches, a stature that runs in his maternal family. His grandfather was 6’8″, and his uncle is 6’11”.

His name is pronounced “JUH-nye,” and as his mother, Julie, noted, it’s often mispronounced. She told the Montgomery Advertiser, “It’s not Johnny. It can look like Johnny, but to me, Johnny could be spelled five or six different ways. So, I get it.”

She added, “When we knew we were having my second son, we wanted our kids’ names to be unique… just have their own personality, have their own name, let it be something that you’re not one of many. With that comes character and strength, so we decided, after a couple of different options, it was going to be Johni.”

Who is Johni Broome’s father?

Johni Broome’s father is John Broome Sr. He used to play football as a defensive end and now owns a lawn-care company in Plant City, near Tampa, Florida. Naturally, Johni was expected to follow in those footsteps, specifically, to become a defensive end like both his father and older brother.

But that changed during puberty, when his body began to resemble that of a basketball player. John told Yahoo Sports, “He wasn’t looking like a 280-pound defensive end. He was shaped like a basketball player.”

The father and son would frequently remain up late practicing Johni’s post moves, which included turnarounds, jump hooks, and drop steps. John kept encouraging him: “You just keep your head down and keep working. Eventually the offers will come.”

Father’s advice was that the future was being foretold. By the time Johni graduated from high school, he had received offers from Florida Atlantic, Georgia Southern, Jacksonville, Bryant, and several others.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
