Jets Allow Wideout Allen Lazard To Seek Trade

After Rodgers, and Adams, wide receiver Allen Lazard could be the next one out of New York!

This offseason will be yet another rebuilding one for the New York Jets, and the work has already begun. The decision to let 4-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers go has put the wheels in motion in the green part of New York. News from ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter is that the Jets have officially given permission to wide receiver Allen Lazard to seek a trade. However, Schefter has also indicated that they are open to keeping him as well.

Lazard, who is 29 years old, has got quite a few good years ahead of him, but finding a potential trade partner may not be as easy as it sounds. First and foremost, his production has dropped quite significantly, and second of all, he is due $11 million in base salary this year. If the Jets are able to trade him, they could save $6.6 million as per Over The Cap. In 2023, Lazard signed a 4-year, $44 million contract with the Jets but the partnership between the two parties has not worked out as planned.

Lazard’s Performances Since Joining The Jets

Prior to joining the New York-based franchise, Lazard was coming off his career best year with starting 15 games and catching 60 receptions for 788 yards and 6 touchdowns. Lazard’s stock was on the rise and he had established a great connection with Rodgers.

However, things took a turn in New York. In 2023, the first year of Rodgers and Lazard with the Jets, Rodgers went down due to an ACL injury in the first game of the season and missed the rest of the year. That resulted in Lazard’s worst statistical season of his career barring his rookie year when he played only one game. In 2023, Lazard played 14 games in which he caught 23 receptions for a mere 311 yards and a single touchdown.

Last year with Rodgers under center again, the Jets were supposed to fare much better but nothing changed. The 29-year-old did have a better year production-wise catching 37 passes for 530 yards and 6 touchdowns, but injuries kept him on the sideline for the majority of the season.

How Aaron Rodgers Cost The Jets

Basically, the past couple of seasons in New York were all about Aaron Rodgers and what he wanted done in order to lead the franchise. The Jets, while signing Rodgers, put complete faith in him hoping to get back to winning ways and back to the postseason as the former Packer was coming off two consecutive MVP seasons.

Thus, in order to please Rodgers, they signed his buddies from Green Bay, first by bringing in Randall Cobb and then Lazard from Green Bay. In 2024, they also traded for Davante Adams, which cost them a 2025 third round pick.

Cobb was a no-show in New York catching just 5 passes for 39 yards and a solitary touchdown. On the other hand, Lazard performed decently, and Adams did quite well catching 67 passes for 854 yards and 7 touchdowns, but the fact of the matter remained that they could not help the Jets win games. Thus, New York is now undoing what they did a couple of seasons ago and clearing house by cutting Rodgers, Adams, and allowing Lazard to find a suitable trade.
