Seventh Seed Paolini vs. Giant-Killer Kudermetova: Who Prevails Under Cincinnati Semifinal Pressure?
Seventh seed Jasmine Paolini will face unseeded Veronika Kudermetova in the blockbuster semifinals of the Cincinnati Open 2025. Paolini, benefitting from a first-round bye, immediately hit her stride in the second round. The Italian swept aside Maria Sakkari, 26th seed Ashlyn Krueger, and Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets before a gritty quarterfinal by rallying from a set down to oust second seed Coco Gauff.
Kudermetova’s route has been all about upsetting the odds. After starting with a win over Suzan Lamens, the Russian went on a remarkable streak of toppling seeds, including 17th seed Belinda Bencic, 16th seed Clara Tauson, and 31st seed Magda Linette. She then booked her place in the last four with a clinical straight-sets win over qualifier Varvara Gracheva.

For Paolini, this year has been both a breakthrough and uneven. She stunned Gauff to win her biggest career title in Rome and went on to lift doubles crowns in Rome and Roland Garros with Sara Errani. The 29-year-old has also reached semifinals in Miami, Stuttgart, and Berlin but has struggled for consistency since. Statistically, she has hit 55 aces this year, winning 60.9% of first-serve points and 46.1% on return, and converting nearly half of her break chances across 41 matches.

Kudermetova, meanwhile, continues to shine in doubles, winning Wimbledon alongside Elise Mertens. In singles, her highlights include a fourth-round run at the Australian Open and quarterfinals in Hobart and Libema. She has produced 154 aces in 37 matches, winning 65.9% of first-serve points and 41.4% of break points converted.
Veronika Kudermetova holds a 3-1 lead in her head-to-head with Jasmine Paolini. Their most recent clash came in Cincinnati only in 2021, where Kudermetova powered through in the Round of 64 to extend her dominance.
The story, however, began back in 2017 during Prague qualifying, when Paolini fought from a set down to claim their first-ever encounter. Kudermetova responded quickly, leveling the score that same year in Hua Hin before taking control with another victory at the 2019 Australian Open.
| Year | Event | Round | Winner | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021 | Cincinnati | Round of 64 | Veronika Kudermetova | 6-3, 6-2 |
| 2019 | Australian Open | Qualifying R1 | Veronika Kudermetova | 7-6(7), 1-6, 6-3 |
| 2017 | Hua Hin | Round of 32 | Veronika Kudermetova | 6-1, 6-4 |
| 2017 | Prague | Qualifying R1 | Jasmine Paolini | 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-4 |

With Paolini riding the momentum of her Rome title and her comeback win over Gauff, it gives her the edge. In any other setting, Paolini would have been the obvious choice, but Kudermetova’s giant-killing run in the event makes all the difference. Surely it will be a tight battle, but Paolini should win.
1 – Since 1990, Jasmine Paolini (Cincinnati and Rome 2025) has become the first Italian to defeat multiple Grand Slam champions at a single Tier 1/WTA-1000 event on hard and clay court. Watershed.#CincyTennis | @CincyTennis @WTA @WTA_insider pic.twitter.com/1JuxAibqLB
