Jannik Sinner Captures Historic Grand Slam Quarterfinal Record After Humbling Alexander Bublik at US Open 2025

The defending champion has his claws out, and will do whatever it takes to keep the trophy in his own cabinet. After thrashing Kazakh powerhouse Alexander Bublik 6-1 6-1 6-1 in the US Open 2025 Round of 16, the Italian reached yet another quarterfinal at a major tournament. Sinner is bidding to win a remarkable fifth Grand Slam, and third in 2025. With the flawless performance against Bublik, the 24-year-old attained a magnificent record.

Just over two months ago, Bublik caused a major upset by beating the World No. 1 in the Terra Wortmann Open Round of 16. The win came at a time when Sinner had reached nine consecutive finals at events that he participated in – starting from late 2024 (including Davis Cup). But after losing the opener, the 28-year-old giant produced some of the best tennis ever seen from him, to send the top seed packing.

Bublik held 55 consecutive service games ahead of his clash vs Sinner. The 6’5” powerhouse had not been broken throughout the 2025 US Open. But after calling Sinner an ‘AI Generated player’ ahead of the match, Bublik had to face the wrath of the machine. It took the four-time Grand Slam champion merely three minutes to break Bublik, and the match was done in three straight sets before fans could finish their popcorn.

“He [Bublik] had a very tough match in his last round,” Sinner stated, when asked about his opponent. Bublik had to endure a tough five set battle against American Tommy Paul in the Round of 32. “He didn’t serve as well as he usually does. I’m very happy. [It was] the first time this year I could play the night match here, and it makes such a big difference.”

Alongside Carlos Alcaraz, Sinner has proven to be a consistent name on the ATP circuit. The duo has rewritten what prolonged success can look like, and they are likely to dominate the sport for the next decade and a half. The Italian has now reached the quarterfinal stage at all four Grand Slam events for the second year running. At the age of 24 years and 8 days, he is the youngest star to achieve this feat. Earlier, it was Novak Djokovic (24 years and 99 days) who held the record.

Sinner also raced to 75 wins as World No. 1, courtesy his rout of Bublik. The man from South Tyrol has achieved this statistic in just 82 matches – only Bjorn Borg (78), Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer (81) have taken fewer matches to achieve the feat. He will now face fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti in the quarterfinals, as he resumes his quest for a title retention.
