James Trafford Set for Manchester City Return in £27m Move from Burnley

Manchester City are poised to re-sign James Trafford from Burnley for £27 million, two years after the highly rated goalkeeper left the Etihad for regular first-team football.

The 22-year-old England U21 international, a product of City’s academy, joined the Clarets in July 2023 in a deal that could rise to £19 million. After an exceptional 2024-25 campaign under Scott Parker, in which he kept a remarkable 29 clean sheets in 45 Championship games and helped Burnley return to the Premier League, Trafford has earned a return to Manchester — this time with a much bigger role in sight.

City Activate Matching Clause for Trafford After Newcastle Bid

Newcastle United had agreed a £27m fee with Burnley to sign Trafford earlier this month. However, Manchester City held both a buy-back clause and matching rights on Trafford, which they have now exercised. The player, keen on returning to his boyhood club, has agreed to a five-year contract with an option for an additional year.

He becomes City’s sixth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of midfielders Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, Sverre Nypan, left-back Rayan Aït-Nouri, and goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli.

A New Challenge at the Etihad

Despite having not made a single senior appearance for City before his 2023 departure, Trafford is now expected to compete seriously for the No. 1 shirt. With Ederson’s long-standing position under potential threat and Stefan Ortega’s future uncertain due to limited opportunities, Trafford’s return adds intrigue to City’s goalkeeping situation.

Ederson, who has been City’s first-choice goalkeeper since 2017, is in the final year of his contract and has been linked to Galatasaray — though he dismissed the speculation as “99% fake news.” Ortega, meanwhile, may now consider his options given Trafford’s arrival.

From Prospect to Premier League-Ready

Trafford has been on a meteoric rise since leaving Manchester. After successful loan spells at Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers, he made 73 appearances for Burnley, including 28 in the Premier League last season. He also starred for England’s U21 side in their 2023 European Championship-winning run, keeping six clean sheets without conceding a single goal.

City view him as a goalkeeper with both the skill and mental maturity to grow into a future first-choice. His clean-sheet record, poise in possession, and big-game temperament are seen as crucial traits by Pep Guardiola’s staff.

Manchester City rarely activate buy-back clauses, but Trafford’s case illustrates why they insist on including them when letting academy players go. The club now adds a homegrown, Premier League-proven keeper to their ranks with high upside and resale value.

Trafford’s return gives Guardiola greater flexibility in goal ahead of a long season, as City prepare for another title defence, Champions League push, and Club World Cup participation.

The only question now is how long it will take before Trafford gets his opportunity to make that long-awaited first senior appearance for Manchester City.
