Jaguars’ Unofficial Depth Chart Provides a Sneak Peek at Where Travis Hunter Could Play in Jacksonville

Prior to the 2025 NFL draft, there was plenty of attention on Colorado Buffaloes’ Travis Hunter, who, in college, played on both sides of the ball as a wide receiver and a cornerback.

Heading into the draft, almost every expert associated with the game of football advised Hunter to pick one position and stick to it. However, the 22-year-old was not having any of it and remained adamant to fulfil his dream of playing two positions in the NFL.

Now, as we head into the first preseason game of the season, the Jaguars have released their unofficial depth chart and, with it, have provided a hint as to where they see Hunter at his best.

Travis Hunter Named Starting Receiver and Backup Corner

As per the unofficial depth chart released by the Jaguars, Travis Hunter has been named as a starting wide receiver and a backup cornerback. Hunter entered the draft as a cornerback, and with the current situation in Jacksonville, he was expected to play the corner position, which is where they need more help.

However, it seems that Liam Coen and the coaching staff have seen something of note during his offensive snaps, leading them to make this decision. Going by the reports from training camp, Hunter has played 109 snaps on offense and 88 snaps on defense.

While he has featured a little more on the offensive side of the ball, there is not a vast difference so as to indicate that the Jaguars are restraining him only on offense. Despite the increased production working on both the offense and defense, Hunter has been a dynamite on the field with near interceptions, pass breakups, as well as brilliant catches in practice.

How Difficult Is It To Play Two Positions in the NFL?

Football in general is a high-contact sport, and the NFL is a tough league. These are no longer amateur players in college, but professional athletes giving it their best shot on every single down.

For Hunter to play as a wideout and a corner in the league, it will take a monumental effort. Not only is it physically demanding on the body, but it is mentally taxing as well. He will get hit much more and be at risk of injury more often.

Even though the 2024 Heisman winner is showing high endurance and stamina levels now, his career could get shortened with the excessive snaps he takes in games. And, not to mention the demands of memorizing two different playbooks, and that too as a rookie.

It’s no secret that Hunter has his work cut out for him in the season ahead. But if practice is anything to go by, this could be one of the best moves to have happened for the people of Duval. Will Hunter be the crucial x-factor in helping Jacksonville get back to postseason football? Only time will tell.
