England have kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign on a strong note. After securing a 2-0 win over Albania in their opening match, they will now face Latvia at Wembley Stadium on Monday.

Meanwhile, Latvia, who also began their campaign this month, secured a narrow 1-0 win against Andorra in their first match. In Tuchel’s debut as England manager, several players shone, including Arsenal youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly who became the youngest player for the Three Lions to score a goal on debut.

While Lewis-Skelly had a memorable night, the same cannot be said for Phil Foden, who struggled throughout the game before being substituted in the 74th minute.

Will Phil Foden Play Today?

Despite having a quiet game, Tuchel had encouraging words for the Manchester City midfielder. The England coach acknowledged Foden’s defensive effort but admitted he is struggling to gain momentum. However, he remained positive about Foden’s contributions.

“Phil is just maybe not finding the momentum at the moment that he can have”, Tuchel said in the pre-match conference.

“Phil needs maybe a little bit closer connections to a No 10 than we could provide in this match. And Marcus created one big chance for Jude Bellingham, and, like I said, had some runs off the ball where we did not use him.

“But, off the ball, the effort was there and that’s what counts.”

Tuchel emphasized that they need to create more one-on-one situations for Foden. While the coach has not confirmed his starting lineup, he hinted that there could be changes from the squad he named for their previous game emphasizing the need to introduce fresh legs.

He stated, “It could also make sense to put some fresh players who really deserve to play.”

This means that Foden’s place in the starting XI is uncertain. However, there’s still a chance that he could still start or be brought on at a later stage giving him some time to prove himself this time around.
