As Inter Milan prepare to host Bayern Munich for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final at the iconic San Siro, history heavily favours the visitors. While Inter may hold a slender 2-1 lead from the first leg, Bayern Munich’s exceptional record at the San Siro presents a major psychological advantage.

Bayern Munich have played three Champions League away games against Inter Milan and remarkably won all three. Even more impressively, all three of those victories came without conceding a single goal, making San Siro one of Bayern’s happiest hunting grounds in the European competition.

1. Inter Milan 0-2 Bayern Munich – September 27, 2006 (Champions League Group Stage)

Bayern Munich claimed a commanding 2-0 win over Inter Milan at the San Siro in their second Champions League Group B match in 2006. The victory came courtesy of late goals from Claudio Pizarro and Lukas Podolski. Inter Milan were reduced to nine men after red cards to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and defender Fabio Grosso in the second half. Bayern took full advantage in the closing stages, with Pizarro breaking the deadlock before Podolski added a second to secure all three points. The result sent Bayern to the top of the group, while Inter were left rooted to the bottom of the table.

2. Inter Milan 0-1 Bayern Munich – February 23, 2011 (Champions League Round of 16, First Leg)

Bayern Munich edged past Inter Milan with a dramatic 1-0 win at the San Siro in the first leg of their 2010–11 Champions League Round of 16 tie. In a tense and finely balanced first-leg tie, Mario Gomez emerged as the hero, scoring a dramatic last-minute winner to give Bayern the advantage. Bayern were the more dominant side throughout the match, controlling possession and tempo while creating more chances. The late goal stunned the San Siro and handed Bayern a crucial away win.

However, despite Bayern’s first-leg win, it was Inter Milan who ultimately progressed to the quarter-finals. In the second-leg encounter at the Allianz Arena, Goran Pandev netted a late winner to seal a dramatic 3-2 victory for Inter. The result saw Inter edge the tie on away goals.

3. Inter Milan 0-2 Bayern Munich – September 7, 2022 (Champions League Group Stage)

Bayern Munich began their 2022–23 Champions League campaign in style with a dominant 2-0 win over Inter Milan at the San Siro, setting the tone for their Group C campaign.Leroy Sane was the star in that match as he opened the scoring in the first half. The German international’s sharp movement and pace proved too much for the Inter defence to handle.

Bayern doubled their lead in the second half through an unfortunate own goal by Danilo D’Ambrosio, who deflected the ball into his own net after a one-two between Sane and Kingsley Coman. Bayern were dominant from start to finish, registering 21 shots in the match – 11 of which were on target.

4. Bayern Munich vs Valencia – 23rd May 2001 Champions League Final (San Siro, Milan)

Remarkably, the Milan stadium was also the scene of Bayern’s 2001 Champions League final victory over Valencia. Both teams scored through penalties during regular time, resulting in a 1-1 stalemate after 90 minutes. Extra time failed to separate the two teams as well, setting the stage for a nail-biting penalty shootout.

Bayern Munich missed their first spot-kick through Paulo Sergio, but the night belonged to legendary goalkeeper Oliver Kahn. The German shot-stopper pulled off three vital saves in the shootout, including the decisive stop from Mauricio Pellegrino, to secure a 5-4 win for the Bavarians. Kahn’s heroics won Bayern their fourth European crown.

As Vincent Kompany’s side look to overturn the deficit and book a place in the semi-finals, they’ll be aiming to extend their dominance at San Siro. With history on their side, Bayern Munich will believe they can turn the tie around just as they’ve done time and again.
