In a Major Shift, the NCAA Could Soon Lift its Ban on Professional Sports Betting

Devavrat Kulkarni

The NCAA could lift the ban on professional sports betting in the coming months!

The NCAA is quickly heading in the direction of lifting its longstanding ban on professional sports betting, which is currently imposed on players, coaches, and staff. Sports betting is legal in most states in the US; however, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), at present, has banned it.

However, according to Pat Forde of SI.com, reports are making the rounds that the NCAA is moving closer in the direction of lifting this ban.

“Momentum is building toward the NCAA removing its prohibition against gambling on professional sports, multiple sources tell Sports Illustrated. The Division I Board of Directors laid the groundwork for such a rule change last month and has forwarded it to the D-I Council for further discussion next week. If the council is in favor, it could be fast-tracked into existence by late June.”

If this is the case, then betting at the professional level will be made legal, but the ban will still remain in place for all sports at the collegiate level.

Earlier this year, on April 21, the Division I board voted 21-1 in favor of removing the ban, but at the same time, the board indicated to the NCAA staff to undertake appropriate measures for safe harbor, limited immunity, or reduced penalties for those student-athletes who admit to sports betting but make it a point to receive help with regards to their gambling problems.

College Athletics Consultant Matt Banker’s Take on Lifting of the Ban

Matt Banker, who is a college athletics consultant, feels that the move, if it goes through, will be a recalibration for college athletics in the ‘cultural’ and ‘philosophical’ sense.

is of the view that the sports betting landscape has changed significantly over the years, even since what it was ten years ago. Today, almost 80% of the United States has legalized sports betting, which was not the case back then.

“This is a cultural and philosophical recalibration for college athletics—both in terms of priorities and resources. The world of sports wagering looks far different in 2025 than it did even ten years ago, as it’s now legal in almost 80% of the United States. From a resource standpoint, if the NCAA national office’s only function was to monitor all three NCAA divisions’ hundreds of thousands of athletes, coaches, and staff for all iterations of sports wagering—including pro-sports wagering—that could be the full-time job for everyone in the building.”

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
