Igor Shesterkin is one of the reason why the Rangers are off a good start
Just about everyone in hockey knew that New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin would come into the 2024-25 NHL season ready to make a statement.
Through the first four games, Shesterkin has more than lived up to expectations, solidifying his position as one of the league’s top netminders.
Shesterkin’s early numbers have been nothing short of impressive. As of October 20, he has posted:
• Record: 3-0-1
• Goals-Against Average (GAA): 1.93 (10th in the league)
• Save Percentage: .935 (13th in the league)
• Saves: 116 (7th in the league)
• Shutouts: 1
• Minutes Played: 243:38 (5th in the league)
These stats reflect Shesterkin’s ability to shut down opponents and keep his team competitive in every game. His calm, poised play between the pipes, especially in key moments, has been crucial to the Rangers’ early success.
Shesterkin is not only driven by the desire to win but also by a lucrative payday that could set new standards for goaltender contracts in the NHL.
After turning down a massive eight-year, $88 million deal from the Rangers, Shesterkin has positioned himself to become the highest-paid goaltender in NHL history. He’s not just looking to top the market—he wants to redefine it.
His performance in a 4-1 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs underscored his value. Stopping 34 of 35 shots, Shesterkin left his mark on the game, drawing high praise from opposing goaltender Anthony Stolarz:
“You can see why he’s going to be the highest-paid goalie in the league,” Stolarz told reporters postgame.
A big part of Shesterkin’s early success stems from his unwavering confidence.
Coming off an outstanding playoff run last season, Igor Shesterkin has carried that form into the new campaign.
His athleticism, quick reflexes, and ability to make crucial second and third saves have been on full display, often keeping the Rangers in tight games.
Even Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews acknowledged Shesterkin’s prowess after their October matchup:
“Did enough to score, maybe not enough in front of their goalie,” Matthews said. “He is one of the best in the League so you’ve got to make sure you’ve got guys in front of him and create a little more havoc. I thought he saw too much. I thought we did a lot of good things, more than enough to hang in there throughout the game but obviously a couple breakdowns early (cost us).”
Another factor in Shesterkin’s early-season success is the offensive support from his teammates. The Rangers have been clicking on offense, scoring 19 goals in his four starts. Overall, the New-York Rangers ranks 2nd in goal scored in the league with 24, trailing only the Devils (27).
This combination of elite goaltending and strong offense draws comparisons to his 2021-22 Vezina Trophy-winning season. That year, Igor Shesterkin led the Rangers to within two wins of the Stanley Cup Final, and many believe that history could repeat itself.
If Igor Shesterkin maintains this level of play, he will once again be in the running for the Vezina Trophy as the league’s best goaltender.
His numbers, composure, and ability to deliver in key moments suggest that he is not just aiming for individual awards but something bigger.
