Iga Swiatek’s Dominant Win in Second Round Against Emma Raducanu Sends Strong Message

Iga Swiatek marches into round 3 after a strong performance

This second-round clash between the defending champion and the number 5 seed, Iga Swiatek, against former US Open champion Emma Raducanu, promised to be a good one. Coming into the French Open, Swiatek had been struggling and was far from her best, even on clay, while Raducanu had had mixed results with several early exits.

Leading the head-to-head 4-0, Swiatek was firmly in control of this budding rivalry, and her performance today showed exactly why she has yet to lose against Raducanu. The Polish star upped her game and dominated from the word go to win the match in an hour and 19 minutes.

Swiatek Powers Through the First Set

The second round tie started off with both players striking the ball well and finding quality shots in the very first game of the match. Swiatek was able to hold after a long 6-minute game. The first set remained on serve with the Polish player leading 2-1, following which she earned the first break of the match.

Swiatek’s crisp groundstrokes were powerful and accurate, with winners coming from both the forehand and backhand. In fact, the Polish player’s heavy hitting caused plenty of difficulty for the former major winner, who had no answers of her own. Swiatek’s serves also troubled the 22-year-old, making it nearly impossible to get quality returns.

Despite trying to mix up her game, Raducanu’s drop shots were also not working well, and a missed smash at 30-40 handed Swiatek an insurance break as the Brit went down 1-5, all but ending any hopes of a comeback in the first set. The world number 5 closed out the first set 6-1 in 35 minutes.

Still No Answers in the Second Set for Raducanu

Switek continued her unrelenting assault on Raducanu, quickly breaking her opponent at 1-1. As the match progressed, the 5-time major winner began moving better on the court, helping her to find the angles needed to pin Raducanu back. As the Brit, she looked to be under quite a bit of pressure on almost every shot.

Despite trying to hang in the second set, Raducanu never looked like troubling the 4-time Roland Garros champion. And, while serving at 2-4, Swiatek broke again to take full control of the set and match. Finally, on match point, Swiatek’s forehand down the line sealed the deal.

The dominant display of tennis from Swiatek is backed up by her 32 winners to Raducanu’s 8, along with 70% first serve points won as opposed to Raducanu’s 52%. The biggest factor, though, was Swiatek’s ability to break serve 4 times while not conceding a single break to her opponent.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
