‘If It Were Me, I Would Have Been…’ – Sophie Cunningham Blasts WNBA Referees Again, Recalls Lexie Hull Incident in Heated Discussion

Fever guard rips officiating while sidelined injured

Sophie Cunningham may soon face disciplinary action once again after sharing her criticism of WNBA officiating. The Indiana Fever guard, recovering from knee surgery, has continued to voice her displeasure with referees despite already being fined multiple times this season.

Speaking on the latest episode of her ‘Show Me Something’ podcast with co-host West Wilson, Cunningham admitted that watching games from the sidelines has not reduced her frustration.

Sophie Cunningham revealed that even while on medication during recovery, she was angered by what she saw as excessive physical play going unpunished.

Cunningham said, “What really pissed me off about last week are three things. They were playing Minnesota, and I think Minnesota’s a great, great team. But I think what is getting out of hand is the refs are allowing it to be too physical.”

She added, “Then people can get away with certain stuff. That’s when emotions flare and that’s when you see fights or people doing things that they shouldn’t be doing.”

Lexie Hull’s Collision With Gabby Williams

Sophie Cunningham pointed to a specific incident involving Indiana guard Lexie Hull, who was struck in the face by an elbow from Minnesota’s Kayla McBride.

While McBride was assessed a technical foul, she was allowed to remain in the game. Cunningham argued that had she been the one involved, the punishment would have been far more severe.

If it were me, I would have been thrown out. And If I say the word ‘ref’ on this podcast, I’m gonna get fined. So I might as well just go balls to the wall,” Sophie Cunningham said, reiterating her belief that officials apply different standards depending on the player.

With the Indiana Fever still battling through their regular season schedule, the guard remains off the court but continues to do podcasts and share her views, especially challenging officiating standards.
