NBA commissioner Adam Silver discussed the NBA ratings on Tuesday. He feels that TV viewership has dropped due to consumers “watching more programming on streaming than they are traditional television.” There are some other factors as well like marketing around the game, the hectic schedule which adds heavy load management and the on-court product.
“I would just say, to say it directly, ratings are down a bit at the beginning of the season, but cable television viewership is down double digits so far this year versus last year,” Silver said, per ESPN’s Tim Bontemps.
“We’re almost at the inflection point where people are watching more programming on streaming than they are in traditional television. And it’s a reason why for our new television deals, which we’re entering into next year, every game is going to be available on a streaming service.”
NBA Cup’s semifinal matchups underwent a 19% drop in viewership from last season, according to Sports Media Watch. Men’s college basketball is down 21 percent, and women’s college games are down 38 percent. NBA games are averaging 1.4 million viewers across ABC, ESPN and TNT this season, 2.5 lakh less than the previous season.
