“I don’t care..” – Victor Wembanyama gives a blunt response on Anthony Davis’ claim about DPOY favouring him

In just his second season in the NBA, Victor Wembanyama is already a household name. The 21-year-old phenom was the most hyped prospect since LeBron James when he was in high school and just like the Lakers legend, he has lived up to everything so far.

In fact, the French giant has already become one of the most-viewed players in the league. Last season, he finished as the third-most viewed NBA player, and his popularity shows no signs of slowing down as he continues his sophomore year in San Antonio. His numbers are nothing short of extraordinary – averaging 24.4 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 3.9 blocks per game. He is currently the NBA’s leading shot-blocker, averaging 4.0 blocks per game.

His defensive prowess can be seen in his relentless commitment to controlling the paint. In just 79 games, he has gone up against 439 different players and blocked 197 shots, stopping almost 45% of them. His ability to alter shots, and protect the rim has led many to believe he is a lock for Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY).

However, Lakers star center Anthony Davis doesn’t believe so.

Speaking with Shams Charania of ESPN, Davis argued that Wembanyama’s lead in the voting wasn’t based purely on performance but on the “narrative” surrounding his hype and potential.

“I think it’s just unfair,” Davis said of Wembanyama’s position in the DPOY race. “It’s the narrative, not the performance. And we should be evaluating what guys do on the court, not how much attention they’re getting off of it.”

As the face of the San Antonio Spurs’ new era, Wembanyama is no stranger to the spotlight, but he is taking all the noise in stride. When asked about Davis’ remarks following a dominant double-double performance of 23 points and 12 rebounds in a loss against Clippers, Wembanyama’s response was direct and unbothered.

“I really don’t care about individual accolades,” Wembanyama said, adding that he doesn’t focus on the DPOY race or any other personal award. “It’s not something I’ve been worrying about.”

For Wembanyama, it is all about team success.

“If I end up being the Defensive Player of the Year, it means I helped my team on that side of the court. It means I’ve done my best and I’ve been rewarded for it,” he explained. “But at the end of the day, the best reward is to win”, the 21-year-old said.
