Hubert Hurkacz vs. Joao Fonseca Preview, Prediction and Betting Odds for the French Open 2025 Round 1

Rudra Dubey

Veteran Hurkacz meets rising star Fonseca in a high-stakes Roland Garros debut clash.

Hubert Hurkacz takes on Brazil’s Joao Fonseca today in a first-round encounter at the 2025 French Open, a classic veteran-versus-rookie clash. This marks their first career meeting. Fonseca, just 18, turned professional last year and has already made waves on the tour, notably winning the Argentina Open earlier this season by defeating Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets, including a tense second-set tiebreak.

Standing across the net is Hurkacz, an eight-time ATP singles champion currently ranked No. 28 in the world, with a career high of No. 6. The Polish star has twice reached the fourth round at Roland Garros (2022, 2024) and brings a full resume to the big stage.

While Hurkacz enters as the clear favorite, the unpredictability of clay and Roland Garros in particular has been known to tilt the odds. Before calling it, let’s break down the players and their form heading into this clash.

Hubert Hurkacz vs. Joao Fonseca Preview

Hurkacz opened his season with a strong semifinal run in Rotterdam, where he pushed top seed Carlos Alcaraz to three sets. However, a lull followed with early exits in Marseille and Indian Wells and a withdrawal from Miami due to a back injury. The Pole regained form with a quarterfinal showing in Rome and a recent finals run in Geneva, where he narrowly lost to Novak Djokovic in a tight three-set battle featuring two tiebreaks.

Though his season has had ups and downs, Hurkacz holds a 14-10 record and impressive numbers: 265 aces, a 78% first-serve win rate, and a 38% break point conversion (from 117 chances).

Fonseca, still early in his career, made a splash by winning his first ATP title at the Argentina Open. On the Challenger Tour, he also captured titles in Canberra and Arizona. Following those wins, he hasn’t advanced past the round of 32 in other events. The Brazilian teen enters Roland Garros with a 10-7 record, 89 aces, a 71% first-serve win rate, and a 33% break point conversion from 133 opportunities.

Hubert Hurkacz vs. Joao Fonseca Prediction

While Fonseca has shown promise with an early ATP title and solid Challenger results, the Pole’s big serve, recent form, and experience at the Slam level give him a clear edge. However, Fonseca’s momentum and young, fearless energy can control the play if Hubert doesn’t manage his serves.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
