Abhinav Goel

As United prepare to face Spurs in 2025 Europa League Final, fans will be hoping the club can build on their proud European legacy.

As one of the most famous clubs in world football, Manchester United has enjoyed a rich history of European success. While their greatest triumphs have traditionally come in the UEFA Champions League, where they’ve lifted the prestigious trophy three times, the club has also experienced some memorable moments in Europe’s secondary competition, the UEFA Europa League.

Although the tournament lacks the glamour and prestige of its Champions League counterpart, the Europa League has provided United with a unique platform to showcase their depth and pursue silverware on the continental stage. Over the years, it’s served as both a route back to Europe’s top tier and a trophy worth chasing in its own right.

How Many Times Have Manchester United Won the Europa League?

Manchester United have won the UEFA Europa League just once. That victory came in the 2016/17 season under Jose Mourinho, a campaign that also saw the Red Devils lift both the Community Shield and the Carabao Cup, completing a treble of sorts. Notably, United entered the Europa League that season through the group stage. Drawn alongside Fenerbahce, Feyenoord, and Zorya Luhansk, United finished second in their group.

From there, the knockout stages brought a series of memorable encounters for the Red Devils. A Zlatan Ibrahimovic hat-trick helped dispatch French side Saint-Etienne, while narrow aggregate wins over Rostov and Anderlecht tested United’s resolve. A nervy semi-final against Celta Vigo was sealed thanks to a Marcus Rashford free-kick.

In the final at Friends Arena in Stockholm, United turned on the style. Paul Pogba opened the scoring against Ajax in the first half, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan added a second after the break to secure a commanding 2-0 win. The victory delivered the club’s first and only Europa League crown. It was a victory that earned them a place back in the Champions League, cementing Mourinho’s debut season as a successful one.

Notably, the 2-0 victory over Ajax came just two days after Manchester had been hit by a devastating tragedy. a terror attack following a concert at the city’s famous Arena. As United prepare to face Tottenham Hotspur in the 2025 Europa League Final, fans will be hoping the club can add a second title to their record and continue building on their proud European legacy.
