How long will Shohei Ohtani be out after shoulder surgery?

Despite the injury, Ohtani played in last 3 games of the World Series.

Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani underwent arthroscopic surgery on Monday, November 4, to repair a labrum tear in his left shoulder.

Ohtani suffered the injury during Game 2 of the MLB World Series on October 26, 2024, when he dislocated his shoulder while sliding into second base. Despite the injury, Ohtani continued to play in the series, helping the Dodgers secure the World Series.

The surgery, performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles, is expected to sideline Ohtani for the entire offseason. However, the Dodgers anticipate that he will be ready for spring training in February 2025.

Notably, this is not the first injury concern Ohtani had in the 2024 season. The 30-year-old underwent surgery on his right elbow in September last year after being diagnosed with a torn UCL. This forced the two-way superstar to play only as a hitter in 2024.

Notably, this was Ohtani’s second elbow surgery. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018 following his first season with the Angels.

While the Dodgers confirmed before the start of the 2024 season that Ohtani will resume pitching in 2025, the shoulder surgery could potentially delay that timeline.

Ohtani, who signed a record $700 million, 10-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers in December last year, had an outstanding season, hitting 54 home runs and stealing 59 bases while also maintaining a .310/.390/.646 slash line.

His recovery timeline will be crucial as he aims to return to his dual role as both a pitcher and a hitter in the upcoming season.
