How the Jakobi Meyers Trade Has Worked Wonders for Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars

Devavrat Kulkarni

Heading towards the end of this year’s regular season, the Jacksonville Jaguars are one of the surprising teams this season. After multiple years of underperforming, the Jaguars currently sit atop the AFC South with a 10-4 record.

This offseason saw some crucial changes, especially with the head coaching change that saw Liam Coen take over the top job. But even then, it hasn’t been all smooth sailing. After starting the season 4-1, the Jaguars quickly dropped 3 of their next 4 games, and it looked like things would go downhill from thereon.

In that period of time, they lost their rookie dual-threat cornerback/wide receiver, Travis Hunter, for the season to a knee injury, while other receivers such as Brian Thomas Jr. and Dyami Brown were struggling with consistency. Luckily for Jacksonville, though, they hit big at the trade deadline, landing former Raiders receiver Jakobi Meyers.

Jakobi Meyers Impact on the Jaguars

Seventh-year receiver Jakobi Meyers started his third season with the Las Vegas Raiders this year, but he was shipped off to Jacksonville after he requested a trade during the midseason trade deadline.

Little did the Jaguars know that this would be the trade that would get their season back on track. Since Meyers joined the team, he has caught 27 passes for 355 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns in 6 games. It’s not like Meyers has league-shattering numbers, but his contribution to the team goes beyond just his receiving stats.

The addition of Meyers has allowed Brian Thomas Jr. to take up his original place as the outside receiver. That is where he is at his most comfortable, while Meyers is taking care of the middle. Ever since Meyers has come to Jacksonville, the Jaguars are the second-highest scoring team (32.9 points per game), only behind the Rams, who are averaging 35 a game.

Prior to Meyers, the Jaguars were putting up just about 20.9 points per game. The majority of those issues came from receivers dropping balls, leading to a diminished pass game.

Meyers Impact on Trevor Lawrence

Jacksonville is now on a 5-game win streak, and Trevor Lawrence is looking more and more like the franchise quarterback the Jaguars believed he would be.

The Jaguars’ quarterback was averaging a passer rating in the mid-70s to early 80s for a 4-game stretch, but there has been consistent improvement in Lawrence’s game in the past three games.

The former number one pick has also thrown 2 or more passing touchdowns in the last 4 games, including a massive 5-touchdown game through the air last week against the Jets. Additionally, the interceptions have also gone down as Lawrence has finally found chemistry with his receivers.

Looking ahead, there is still a long way to go for this season. The first order of business for the Jaguars is to continue winning and book a spot in the playoffs. From thereon, each win will be a boost for the team that has not had much postseason success since the 2018 season.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
