The 2025 WNBA postseason gets underway on September 14 and concludes with the best-of-seven Finals on October 19. Eight teams qualify based on regular-season records, seeded 1 through 8 in a single bracket.

Qualification and Seeding

Eight of the league’s 13 teams advance. There are no conference divisions in the playoff picture as seeds are determined by win–loss records. Ties are broken first by head-to-head results, then by conference record, and finally by point differential. Home-court advantage in each matchup belongs to the higher seed throughout the playoffs.

Series Format

WNBA Finals (Best-of-Seven): For the first time, the championship series stretches to a maximum of seven games in a 2-2-1-1-1 layout. The higher seed hosts Games 1, 2, 5, and 7, with the lower seed hosting Games 3, 4, and 6.

Regular season ends September 11.
First-round matchups run September 14–18.
Semifinals typically span September 20–27.
Finals begin around September 29 and conclude by October 19 if all seven games are needed.

Expanding the Finals to seven games responds to calls for a longer, more decisive championship climax, giving teams extra opportunity to adjust strategies and showcase star talent.

Meanwhile, early rounds remain efficient, with the three-game opener minimizing travel and keeping momentum high, while the five-game semifinals strike a balance between length and intensity.

Every series guarantees at least three games, and Finals contenders can play as many as seven. High seeds benefit from extra home-court games, but lower seeds still have a viable path by stealing a road victory. This straightforward bracket replaces byes or play-in rounds, ensuring each qualified team starts with equal footing and a clear roadmap to the title.
