Seventh-seed Holger Rune will take on 28th-seed Alex Michelsen in the 2025 Cincinnati Open round of 32. The Danish ace dispatched Roman Safiullin in straight sets to kick off the event with a win, while Michelsen came from behind to beat Corentin Moutet. It would be a finest hard-court clash between these two.
Holger Rune didn’t participate in the City DC Open and made a return in Masters 1000 event in Toronto. The Danish ace suffered an exit in the round of 16 against Australia’s Alexei Popyrin. The 22-year-old had a title glory this year at Barcelona Open where he knocked out World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz in the final. He has posted a 25-25 W/L record in 2025. His success rate is more than 80% on hard court but still, he has to make a deep run in Cincinnati.
50 – Holger Rune (22y 100d) is both the youngest Scandinavian and just the fourth player born since 2000 to achieve 50 ATP Masters 1000 match wins after Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Felix Auger Aliassime. Milestone.#CincyTennis | @CincyTennis @atptour @ATPMediaInfo pic.twitter.com/kBA18h1Fm2

Alex Michelsen showed a great comeback in second round after dropping the opening set. The American ace had a quarterfinal run in the National Bank Open and lost to eventual runner-up Karen Khachanov. The 20-year-old won the title at Challenger Estoril where he was the second-seed player. He had a semifinal run in Mallorca and Delray Beach Open. Overall, he had a roller-coaster ride and hardly crossed the line in opening round at masters and major events. He reached the fourth round of the Australian Open and beat Stefanos Tsitsipas and Karen Khachanov in the career-best run.

There is no H2H record between Holger Rune and Alex Michelsen. It will be the first time when two players will lock horns on the ATP tour.
| Holger Rune | Category | Alex Michelsen |
| 9 | Current Ranking | 34 |
| 164–100 | Career W-L | 63–57 |
| 25-15 | YTD W-L | 26-19 |
| 5 | Career Titles | 1 |
| 0 | Grand Slams | 0 |
| 1 | YTD Titles | 0 |
Holger Rune delivers value on the hard court with consistency on his groundstrokes. The World No. 9 will have a certain edge on Michelson considering his experience. He had a semifinal run in last year’s Cincinnati Open. Michelsen showed great temperament in Australian Open with a career-best Grand Slam run and he came from behind to take the second-round match. He had beaten top-10 players previously so it would be a great matchup.
Prediction: Holger Rune to win in straight sets.
Holger Rune enters as the clear favorite at 4/7, while the American ace, Michelsen stands at 11/8. The odds reflect Rune’s classic recent form and impressive head-to-head record against top-50. Odds are clearly pointing out a straight-set victory for the Danish ace.
