Holger Rune Injury Update – Holger Rune Suffers Dramatic Leg Injury, French Open Participation in Jeopardy

Flavio Cobolli reached the third round of the 2025 Madrid Masters after Holger Rune was forced to retire on Friday. The No. 8 seed was unable to continue in the second-round match at the Caja Mágica due to injury. The dramatic leg injury will be a big blow for Rune ahead of the 2025 Roland Garros.

When Holger Run left the game, his Italian rival was leading 6-2 in the game. Rune’s withdrawal helped Cobolli to reach the next round of the competition. He’ll play American Brandon Nakashima, the No. 31 seed, in the next round. However, Holger Rune will work on the recovery but his participation on upcoming clay-court grand slam tournament is in jeopardy.

What Happened to Holger Rune? Will He Miss 2025 French Open?

The Dane, world No. 9, tried hard to put in effort in the game, but his body couldn’t support it. He injured his right leg against Flavio and also had a medical timeout after the fifth game. After few minutes later, he decided to walk out when the Italian clinched the opening set 6-2.

“Unfortunately I had a little twist in my knee during warm up today, and I felt it during the match,” Holger Run said via social media. “I think it was the best solution to stop even though I was looking very much forward to continue my positive ride in Spain. See you next year Mutua Madrid Open.”

Holger Rune, who celebrates his 22nd birthday in four days, was the finalist of Indian Wells, and this clay court season was vital for him. The Dane is 12-7 on clay over the past year and has an 80% winning rate on serve.

Rune’s walkover highlights the unforgiving nature of the sport, but usually, a tennis player finds a way to overcome the injury. The leg injury remains crucial for any tennis player, especially for a Grand Slam. Such injuries push tennis stars to withdraw from major competitions. French Open is only four weeks away and Rune requires a strong recvovery.

Meanwhile, there is no fresh update on his injury, but Holger Rune’s participation in Roland Garros remains in jeopardy. The world No. 9 beat Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets to win the Barcelona Open one week back. It was his first ATP 500 title, and he returned to the Top 10 in over a year. Rune is 10-3 in the French Open, and his best run came in 2022 and 2023 when the Dane reached the quarterfinal stage.
