Helmut Marko Formula 1 Accident- What Happened to Helmut Marko?

Rohan Singh

Did you know this unfortunate fact about Helmut Marko of Red Bull Racing?

Helmut Marko is a popular Formula 1 celebrity. He is the Chief Advisor of Red Bull Racing, known for his controversial decisions and hot takes. Marko has been associated with Formula 1 and Red Bull Racing for past 20 years. Since the start of the team, he has brought forth talented drivers to the sport. He is also among the key figures behind the success of the team and its ruthless attitude towards Formula 1 racing.

However, it is a little known fact that Helmut Marko was also a Formula 1 driver. Marko was a racing driver before his work at Red Bull Racing. He is a two-winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Helmut Marko competed in Formula 1 during the 1971 and 1972 seasons. He drove for Ecurie Bonnier and Yardley BRM teams during his first couple of races. However, a major accident caused him to end his Formula 1 career abruptly at the age of 29. He was racing for Austria- Marlboro BRM during the 1972 season during which he suffered serious injuries.

Helmut Marko Formula 1 Accident- What Happened to Helmut Marko’s Eye?

Helmut Marko is blind in one-eye. He was injured while racing during the 1972 French Grand Prix held at the Circuit de Charade. Marko’s accident was due to the characteristic volcanic terrain of the Circuit Charade.

During the 1972 French Grand Prix, Helmut Marko was driving behind the March of Ronnie Peterson, when a rock shot up his helmet visor. The debris ran through his visor like a bullet and blinded him in one eye. It was the immediate end of his Formula 1 career. The drivers racing at Circuit de Charade would often kick up rocks on track when he took the outside line or went off track.

Talking about his accident, Helmut Marko says-

“I knew back then that I would never again be able to compete on a competitive level and I didn’t want to end up as a ‘gentleman driver’. Now I have to say that I am really happy and lucky that I survived that period with only the loss of an eye…”

The falling debris from mountain was a regular problem at the track which caused its eviction from Formula 1 calendar. As a result of his accident, Helmut Marko is permanently blind in his left eye. It’s a seldom mentioned fact in Formula 1 and hardly many people know about it.
