Harvey Barnes Brace Stuns Manchester City As Newcastle Seal Famous 2–1 Win

Abhinav Goel

Newcastle United produced one of the standout performances of the season as Harvey Barnes scored twice to hand Manchester City a 2-1 defeat at St James’ Park. The win denied Pep Guardiola’s side a golden chance to close the gap on league leaders Arsenal. The atmosphere was electric on Tyneside, and Eddie Howe’s side fed off the energy from the first whistle.

Despite a bruising defeat to Brentford before the international break, Newcastle showed character to earn a rare Premier League win over City. For Howe, it was his first league victory over Guardiola, and Newcastle’s first triumph against City in the Premier League since January 2019. And it came at the end of a chaotic high-tempo contest.

Harvey Barnes Inspires a Memorable Night for Newcastle

Harvey Barnes was the star of the evening. The winger opened the scoring midway through the second half after being slipped through by Bruno Guimaraes. He fired past Gianluigi Donnarumma through a crowded penalty area. It capped a dominant spell where Newcastle created chance after chance but lacked the final touch.

City equalised moments later in scrappy fashion. Newcastle failed to clear a corner, allowing Ruben Dias to strike from close range, with the ball deflecting off Fabian Schar on its way in. Newcastle responded immediately. Jacob Murphy swung in a teasing cross that found its way to Guimaraes at the far post. His header crashed off the underside of the bar, and Barnes reacted quickest to hook the ball over the line. A long VAR review for two potential offsides followed, but both Barnes and Guimaraes were deemed onside, sparking wild celebrations in the stands.

Meanwhile for City, the defeat is a major setback. Victory would have cut Arsenal’s lead at the top to a single point. For Newcastle, it was a night to savour. St James’ Park roared from start to finish, and Barnes etched his name into the headlines with a decisive brace. After struggling at Brentford, Newcastle rediscovered their sharpness and punished City’s lapses at both ends of the pitch. This was the response Howe demanded, and his team delivered with energy and aggression.
