Grigor Dimitrov Injury – What happened to Grigor Dimitrov?

Devavrat Kulkarni

Dimitrov's injury woes continue to torment him on the biggest stages

Grigor Dimitrov started his campaign for the 2025 French Open with a round one match against Ethan Quinn in which he was heavily favored to win. The Bulgarian seeded number 16 at Roland Garros took the stage against his American counterpart, ranked outside the top 100.

Leading the match 6-2, 6-3, 2-6, the Bulgarian announced his decision to retire following an injury to what is suspected to be his thigh region. After taking control of the match, going up 2 sets to love, Dimitrov felt something in the third set and was unable to recover ever since, as he dropped the final 4 games. Going on to lose the third set, the 16th seed called it a day, shaking hands with Quinn.

Unfortunately for Dimitrov, this is a run of very bad luck when it comes to injuries and grand slams. In fact, the Bulgarian has set one such record that no professional athlete would ever want to have.

Dimitrov and his Unpleasant Runs at Grand Slams

Dating back to the 2024 Wimbledon, Grigor Dimitrov has retired in four straight Grand Slams. Dimitrov’s run at retiring in 4 straight majors started during his 4th round match against Daniil Medvedev. The pair couldn’t even complete the first set as Dimitrov threw in the towel down 3-5 due to a reported abductor tear injury in his leg.

The Bulgarian entered the final slam of the year in 2024, participating in the US Open, where he reached the quarterfinals. After an impressive 5-set victory over Andrey Rublev in the previous round, Dimitrov took on Francis Tiafoe and was down 2 sets to 1 and 1-4 in the fourth set before pulling out. Although unclear what the exact problem was, Dimitrov stated that the reason for his retirement was a combination of everything.

If that was not enough, his injury woes continued to haunt him at the 2025 Australian Open. Playing in his first round match against Francesco Passaro, the 34-year-old once again ended his campaign early while down a set and a break at 1-2 in the second set. As per reports, Dimitrov suffered a lower hip problem, which wouldn’t allow him to continue playing further.

Where Does Dimitrov Go From Here?

Once seen as a talented player and even compared to the great Roger Federer for his similarities in executing the single-handed backhand, Dimitrov’s injuries never allowed him to make as much impact as he could have had he stayed healthier.

Now, at age 34, there may not be much left in the tank for the Bulgarian, and he could ride out his final few years on tour wondering what could have been. Throughout his journey in tennis and in the 58 majors that he has participated in, Dimitrov has retired in 9 of them, but the worst part is that most of them have come in the past five years.

The next major on the calendar is Wimbledon, which will be starting on the 30th of June. That gives Dimitrov just about a month’s time in between to recover from his latest injury. If the injury is not as severe, he could be back on court in a few weeks time, but if not, there is a good chance that we will not be seeing the Bulgarian at SW19 this year.

After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
