The Bulgarian awaits either Novak Djokovic or Sebastian Korda in the last four stage.
Multiple-time Grand Slam semifinalist Grigor Dimitrov showcased immaculate resolve to come through his Miami Open quarterfinal on Wednesday. The Bulgarian brute had to save a match point before beating Francisco Cerundolo 6-7(6) 6-4 7-6(3) in nearly three hours.
This was Dimitrov’s 150th victory at the Masters-1000 level, having shown a very high level of play in Miami thus far. By the end of the tussle, the two players were practically breathless – it was a match where Dimitrov and Cerundolo used every last corner of the court. Grigor now awaits the winner of Novak Djokovic vs Sebastian Korda on Friday.

The match started on a high note for Argentine Cerundolo – he broke Dimitrov’s serve to love in the opening game. It was only the first time that the Bulgarian was broken in the entire tournament. Nonetheless, he broke back straight away and also went on to have seven set points (none of which he converted) before losing the opener.

In the second set, Dimitrov took a more attacking approach and came up to the net with more efficiency. His backhand saw more success, and he didn’t drop a single point behind his first serve. In the deciding set, the 33-year-old veteran was down 0-3, before pulling off a comeback.
Towards the end of the match, ‘Baby Fed’ was visibly exhausted. Although he doesn’t look to be declining whatsoever, his age is doing him no favours. The Bulgarian had to cancel his post-match interview and be helped off the court after a gruesome three set win.
Going back and forth for 2 hours and 48 minutes in the scorching Miami Gardens is no mean feat – and this is what Dimitrov and Cerundolo had to endure in their quarterfinal. Evidently dealing with fatigue and possible cramps at the fag end, the former World No. 3 was praised by the legendary Martina Navratilova after coming through.
“He was running on fumes at the end of the second set,” laid out the 18-time Grand Slam singles champion. She evaluated the match on Sky Sports Tennis. “What an amazing effort from Grigor. He was down and just kept coming back. Cerundolo looked less tired and I would’ve backed him to win, but Grigor did it.”
How far can Grigor Dimitrov go at this year’s Miami Open? Let’s wait and watch.
