Graham Potter Open to Sweden Job After Jon Dahl Tomasson’s Exit

Abhinav Goel

Former Chelsea and West Ham United manager Graham Potter has expressed his willingness to take charge of the Swedish national team following the sacking of Jon Dahl Tomasson. Sweden currently sit bottom of Group B with just one point from four matches, having suffered defeats to Kosovo, Switzerland, and drawn with Slovenia.

As a result, Tomasson was dismissed after Sweden’s dismal start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. Tomasson’s exit has opened the door for a potential return to Sweden for Potter, where his managerial career first took flight.

I Have Strong Feelings for Sweden: Graham Potter

Speaking to Fotbollskanalen from his home in Sweden, Potter confirmed he is open to the opportunity. “I’m between jobs and open to anything where I feel I can contribute,” said the 50-year-old Englishman. “I have strong feelings for Sweden — two of my children were born here, and I have a deep understanding of the country and its football culture. The job as head coach of the Swedish national team would be fantastic.

Potter spent over seven years at Ostersunds FK, where he famously guided the club from the fourth tier of Swedish football to the top flight and into European competition. Under his leadership, Ostersund lifted the Swedish Cup in 2017 and made headlines with their Europa League campaign, defeating the likes of Galatasaray and Hertha Berlin before a memorable tie against Arsenal.

I’m at a point where the next thing I take on has to be something I truly believe in,” he said. “It’s not about the level or the money — it’s about where I can make a difference and feel supported. I’ve been fortunate in my career, so financial factors won’t dictate my decision.”

While Potter denied having formal talks with the Swedish Football Association, he remains one of the frontrunners should they approach him. His track record of success in Swedish football, combined with his affection for the country, makes him an appealing candidate to rebuild a side that boasts elite attacking talent in Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres.
