Golden State Valkyries’ Playoff Chances: Can Valkyries Make it to Playoffs in Debut WNBA Season?

Garima Ranawat

The Golden State Valkyries are in the seventh spot in the standings.

The 2025 WNBA regular season is approaching its end, and with each passing game, anticipation has been building around the teams that would end up in the top eight. This season the fight is not among 12 but 13 teams, considering the expansion of the WNBA with the Golden State Valkyries. The Valkyries fared comparatively well in their debut season and are currently in the seventh spot in the standings.

Golden State took some time to adjust in the season, and were able to register five wins in their first ten games. Currently, they are on a three-game winning streak, and have won seven of their last ten fixtures. Overall, they have recorded 17 victories and suffered 15 losses with a win pct of .531. Talking about their top performers, Kayla Thornton is leading the Valkyries in scoring, rebounding, and steals at an average of 14.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game.

Veronica Burton is leading them in assists with an average of 5.2 assists per game while Temi Fagbenle leads the charts in blocks at an average of 0.5 blocks per game. The Valkyries have twelve regular season games to go, and they are expected to fare well in the remaining contests as well.

Would Golden State Valkyries Be Able to Secure Playoff Berth in Debut WNBA Season?

As mentioned, the Valkyries are in the seventh spot in the standings, just above the cut-off mark. While the current scenario keeps them safe, they still have to contest 12 regular season games, hence, nothing could be said right now. However, according to ESPN’s Basketball Power Index, the Valkyries have a 55.4% chance of grabbing a spot in the postseason.

The second half of the standings is far from being stable. Considering what is at stake, every win carries outsized weight and tiebreakers, too, can play a decisive role down the stretch. They quickly bounced back from their two consecutive losses, and recorded three straight victories showing real signs of resilience. Even if they have Kayla Thornton sidelined for the remainder of the season, the Valkyries have responded with collective effort and as a unit. If they follow the same path going forward, and their margin of error is razor thin, the Valkyries’ chances of securing a playoff berth is still very much alive.
