Freddie Freeman has done more damage to his surgically repaired ankle!
Freddie Freeman, the reigning 2024 World Series MVP, found himself sidelined for Monday’s game against his former team, the Atlanta Braves, due to what can only be described as a bizarre accident. The Dodgers’ star first baseman slipped while entering the shower at home, aggravating the surgically repaired ankle that’s been causing him trouble for a while. Manager Dave Roberts described the mishap as a “little” slip, but it was enough to cause swelling and keep Freeman out of the lineup for the night’s 6-1 victory.
Freddie Freeman had a “mishap” entering the shower at home and tweaked the same surgically-repaired right ankle, Dave Roberts said. Won’t be available tonight and is day to day. https://t.co/X6BSRn6Pte

The injury occurred over the weekend, with Freeman showing up at the ballpark on Sunday, an off day for the Dodgers, looking for treatment. The swelling in his ankle quickly flared up, and just like that, Freeman was ruled out for Monday. While the injury is being called day-to-day, there’s hope that Freeman could return as early as Tuesday, depending on how the swelling responds.
Dave Roberts couldn’t help but laugh a little at the irony. The manager said that the only time he could recall Freeman being truly unable to play was during last year’s NL Championship Series when Freeman was dealing with a much worse version of this same ankle injury, which ultimately required surgery. “For the most part, he’s always kicking and screaming,” Roberts joked, implying Freeman’s tendency to push through just about anything.
But it looks like even Freeman’s legendary pain tolerance has its limits, especially when it comes to random shower mishaps. The 33-year-old was expected to get more rest early in the season, a plan he wasn’t exactly thrilled about given his never-ending desire to play every single game. He already missed the Tokyo Series to start the season due to discomfort in his left rib area, a problem that he managed to play through last postseason. In addition to this, Freeman had already stated during Spring Training that managing his right ankle would be a season-long challenge, and he continues to get extensive treatment before and after games to keep it under control.

Freeman’s start to the season has been solid, hitting .250 with two home runs, a double, and four RBIs in his first three games. For now, the Dodgers will have to wait for Freeman’s ankle to settle down, hoping it doesn’t derail the early momentum he’s been building.
