FIFA Confirm Sole Bidders for 2031 & 2035 Women’s World Cup: US-Mexico & UK Set to Host

With No Rival Bids, the US-Mexico Joint Bid and the UK’s Proposal Stand As the Only Candidates for the 2031 and 2035 Tournaments.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has officially confirmed that the United States and Mexico made a joint bid for the 2031 Women’s World Cup. They also confirmed that the United Kingdom are the sole candidate for hosting the 2035 Women’s World Cups.

They made the announcement was during the 49th UEFA Congress in Belgrade, Serbia. Thus, solidifying the path for these nations to stage the prestigious tournaments. If both bids meet FIFA’s compliance standards, then the UK will host a football World Cup for the first time since 1966.

Whereas, it will be the second time for the US after staging the Women’s World Cup back in 2003. Meanwhile, Mexico, which have never hosted the event, is expected to co-host with the US. The two federations withdrew their bid for the 2027 tournament to focus on 2031.

Path Cleared for UK & U.S.-Mexico Bids

FIFA had invited federations from UEFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to bid for the 2035 tournament. Reportedly, Spain, Portugal, and Morocco were considering a joint bid. However, Infantino had confirmed that no other valid submissions were made:

“The 2031 bid is from the USA and potentially some other Concacaf nations. The 2035 bid is from Europe, from the home nations.”

The UK bid is supported by the Football Associations of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. They have government backing but they must formally submit required information by November. Mark Bullingham, CEO of the English FA, expressed enthusiasm, saying:

“Hosting the first FIFA World Cup since 1966 with our home nations partners will be very special. The hard work starts now, to put together the best possible bid by the end of the year.”

Similar to the Men’s World Cup from 2026, FIFA is also considering expanding the Women’s World Cup from 32 to 48 teams by 2031. With no competing bids, the road appears to be clear for both the 2031 and 2035 tournaments for UK, US, and Mexico. FIFA will take a final decision at the 2026 Congress after completing all bid evaluations.
