Fever Star Sophie Cunningham Opens Up on her Future with Franchise in 2026 Season

Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham opened up on her future with the franchise during the 2026 WNBA season. The star guard, who was traded to Indiana before the ongoing season, will be an unrestricted free agent in 2026. Before Indiana, she spent six seasons with the Phoenix Mercury after being selected as the 13th overall pick in the 2019 WNBA Draft.

Cunningham spoke during her exit interview, after the Fever suffered a 3-2 loss to the Las Vegas Aces in the semifinals. Apart from bashing leadership and the league management, Cunningham discussed her future plans with the franchise. The 29-year-old said that she might entertain offers from other teams, but would want to continue being with the Fever as she had a great time here.

“I have loved being here, and I don’t think that’s news to anybody…..I’ve been in the league seven years, and I’ve never been part of a team like this,” said Cunningham, as per Chloe Peterson. “My hope is, I’ve had a great time here, and I would like to continue that. I might be blonde, but I can’t just not look at other opportunities.”

The Missouri alum signed a one-year deal with the Fever for the 2025 season, which is worth $100K. In the current season, she dropped 8.6 games, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 30 appearances including 13 starts. She was one of the five players that the team lost due to seasonal injuries.

Regarded as one of the most outspoken players in the league, she has been highly active on social media. She has also launched a podcast called ‘Show Me Something’ which she co-hosts with reality show star West Wilson.

Recently, the Fever started a GoFundMe fundraiser clearly as “more of a joke than anything”. However, she went on to add that it was “for fines only or to charity for a yacht idk.” However,, her joke ended up backfiring and fans actually started making donations. So far, the donated amount crossed $5,000.

It compelled the 6-1 guard to clarify the real intent behind creating the fund on social media. She took X to write, “This is a joke. relax you clowns….I set a goal for 10 million. There’s just no way you can think I’m actually serious.” Cunningham added, “To be clear, whatever we raise here will be going directly to Ronald McDonald House Charities. I’ll take care of my own fines. Y’all are the best though.”

Throughout the 2025 season, there have been numerous instances where Cunningham has openly criticized the league for their unfair officiating. While the fearlessness earned her fans’ love, the Fever star had to pay decent sums from her salary after being hit with WNBA fines.
