“They Are Failing Us as a League”- Sophie Cunningham Shares Unfiltered Views About WNBA Leadership, Weighs on What Must be Changed in the League

Sophie Cunningham joins WNBA players in leaderhip's criticism.

Indiana Fever’s star guard Sophie Cunningham once again didn’t hold back on her opinions. Cunningham addressed the media during her exit interview following Fever’s semifinals loss to the Las Vegas Aces and discussed the WNBA leadership. Her comments came after Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier’s blunt criticism of the leadership and commissioner Cathy Engelbert

Cunningham, who has never shied away from speaking her mind, once again went all guns blazing on the league. She said that the management is failing us as a league, while adding that they are “definitely failing us as players”. The 29-year-old added, “It’s pretty shameful she [commissioner Cathy Engelbert] always makes it about her when it should have nothing to do with her.”

The Missouri alum went on to say that while a few people in top positions in the league must be good at business, they lack knowledge about basketball. “I think there are a lot of people in positions of power in the WNBA who, they might be really great business people, but they don’t know s*** about basketball, and that’s got to change,” Cunningham said.

“This season was amazing in so many ways. But it was also a season from hell. I’m just tired of our league. They need to step up and be better.”

Sophie Cunningham Reacts to Cathy Engelbert’s Alleged Comments on Caitlin Clark

In her first season with the Indiana Fever, the former Mercury star emerged as one of the key players for Stephanie White’s team. While her season was cut short due to a torn MCL, Cunningham continued to make an impact in the league, off the field. Having finished the season with an average of 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game, Cunningham made sure to extend her support to fellow players, especially her teammates while sitting out on sidelines.

She was one of the most outspoken players in the league, defending her teammates and criticizing the league. One testament of it was her recent comments she made on Engelbert’s alleged remarks about Caitlin Clark. Recently, Napheesa Collier revealed how Engelbert made insulting remarks about the league players and Clark.

Reacting to these alleged remarks, Cunningham said, “people only know Cathy because of C…. She’s the most delusional leader our league has seen.” She added, “AND IT SHOULDN’T EVER BE ABOUT OUR COMMISSIONER IN THE FIRST PLACE.”

Notably, Cunningham was one of the five players who the Fever lost mid season due to injuries.
