Falcons Respond to NFL’s $250,000 Fine Over Shedeur Sanders Prank Call Incident

The 2025 NFL Draft, which was held on April 24th-26th in Wisconsin, was a critical moment for the Atlanta Falcons, who had their sights on a rebuild after a 7-10 season in 2024. With 5 picks in the draft, they prioritized heavily on defense. Their drafted Jalon Walker, James Pearce Jr., Xavier Watts, Billy Bowman Jr., and Jack Nelson. While the draft was more or less a success for the Falcons, the majority of the focus shifted to a controversial prank call involving quarterback Shedeur Sanders, which triggered a wide range of emotions and some hefty fines.

Sanders came into the draft, projected to be a top-10 pick in the NFL draft. However, Sanders slipped all the way into the fifth round of the draft, and was finally selected by the Cleveland Browns as the 144th overall pick. The reason for the slide is still not that clear, but many believe that it was not his talent, but his conduct and demeanor off the field, that caused the massive slide. Multiple sources also state that Sanders was arrogant and cocky, which is not something that most teams like in the NFL, as they look at everything, from talent, to conduct, to the way you treat people. It also didn’t help that his father Deion Sanders, publicly stated multiple times that he didn’t want Shedeur to play for certain teams, which may not have sat right with various teams that were initially interested in acquiring him.

NFL Fines Falcons $250,000 for Data Breach

The NFL fined the Falcons $250,000 and defensive coordinator $100,000 for failing to secure confidential data. Jax Ulbrich, Jeff’s 21-year-old son, accessed Sanders’ phone number via his father’s iPad, which helped him make the prank call. The Falcons’ statement which they released earlier, accepted the penalty, affirmed cooperation, and also mentioned how they have enhanced data safety protocols. Jeff Ulbrich called the breach unacceptable and apologized to Sanders’ family, as per sources. The statement also mentions about how the Ulbrich family is cooperating with the Falcons to participate in community service activities, following the incident.

It was a shame what transpired in the NFL draft, as players work all their lives to get that one important phone call, and it also happens to be one of the most important moment of their lives. Jax Ulbrich’s mistakes, has thoroughly cost his father Jeff and the Atlanta Falcons their reputation, and it was embarrassing to watch.
