Emerson Royal’s Flamengo switch could boost Roma’s transfer hopes

Ritam Dey

Emerson Royal appeared set to leave AC Milan for Turkish giants Besiktas this summer, but a dramatic twist may now send him back to Brazil instead. The 25-year-old right-back, who joined Milan from Tottenham last year, was reportedly on the verge of finalizing a deal with Besiktas. However, Flamengo have swooped in with a late move, and talks are now ongoing between the Brazilian club, Milan, and the player over a potential agreement.

Besiktas setback turns into opportunity for Roma
While Flamengo’s last-minute hijack may have disappointed Besiktas, the shift in destination could have unexpected benefits for Roma. The Giallorossi have long been in negotiations for Flamengo’s highly-rated right-back Wesley Franca, who already has a contract agreement worth €2.5 million per season. Roma have also submitted a €25 million offer with an additional €5 million in bonuses.

Yet, Flamengo have stalled on letting the 21-year-old depart, concerned about lacking a suitable replacement. Emerson Royal’s arrival would directly fill that void, finally paving the way for Wesley’s transfer to the Italian capital.

A domino effect in the full-back market
Should Emerson sign with Flamengo, it would effectively unlock Wesley’s move to Serie A — resolving Roma’s month-long pursuit of the Brazilian prospect.

For Milan, it also provides a solution to offload Emerson, while Flamengo could benefit from a seasoned European full-back as they prepare for their domestic and continental campaigns. All eyes now turn to how quickly the triple negotiations unfold.
