Can the American knock off a big seed in the Round of 64?

Days after her semifinal appearance in Washington DC, Elena Rybakina shifts her focus to the 2025 National Bank Open in Montreal. The No. 9 seed is set to face American young gun Hailey Baptiste in a top notch Round of 64 clash. The winner of this match will face either Linda Noskova or Jaqueline Cristian in the third round. With the help of BetMGM, we look to predict the result of this match and give you the best possible odds.

Elena Rybakina vs Hailey Baptiste Match Preview

The 2025 season has proven to be a rollercoaster ride for Elena Rybakina. Having undergone several changes in terms of her coaching unit, the 26-year-old Kazakh is yet to return to her devastating best. Her solitary title came at the Internationaux de Strasbourg, apart from which she reached semifinals in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Washington. The 2022 Wimbledon champ has a 33-14 record this year, and she will be desperate to return to the Top-10 very soon (currently No. 12 in the world).

Hailey Baptiste overpowered fellow American Osuigwe with relative ease in the opening round. The 23-year-old has rapidly risen up the ranks, and is on the hunt for her maiden tour-level trophy. Baptiste started the year in fine style, reaching the QFs in Auckland. She also made the Round of 16 and Round of 32 at the French Open and Wimbledon respectively. Currently on a 24-17 run this year which has given her a World No. 50 ranking, Baptiste partnered Venus Williams to make the last eight at the Citi DC Open last week.

The Canadian Open Round-2 will be the first career meeting between Rybakina and Baptiste. Their head-to-head currently stands at 0-0, as of mid 2025.

Elena Rybakina vs Hailey Baptiste WTA National Bank Open 2025 Prediction

Baptiste produced a scrappy performance against Osuigwe in her opening encounter. Nonetheless, it was just enough to ensure victory in straight sets. Against Rybakina, the American will have to go for her shots much more. The 6’0” powerhouse was leaning into her groundstrokes at DC, which spells trouble for the rest of the circuit. If Rybakina can maintain a high percentage of first serves, she is definitely the favourite against comparatively inexperienced opposition.

Prediction: Elena Rybakina in three sets.
