Ecuador vs Argentina Preview, Betting Odds and Predictions – 09/09/25

Moumita Dutta

Ecuador will host Argentina in Guayaquil on Tuesday as both teams will conclude their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaigns. The match carries little pressure in terms of standings. Mainly because both sides have already booked their spots at next year’s tournament.

Argentina are leading the CONMEBOL group after a dominant run. Whereas, Ecuador are sitting comfortably in fourth place despite enduring a recent goal drought. The fixture could serve as a test of Ecuador’s defensive resilience against the highest-scoring team in the qualifiers.

Ecuador vs Argentina Preview

Ecuador

The home side, Ecuador have relied heavily on defensive solidity. They’ve conceded just five goals in 17 matches. It’s the best record in South America’s qualifiers. However, their attacking form has dipped significantly. They’ve now gone four games without a goal since Enner Valencia’s brace in March.

Valencia remain their biggest threat and will look to end their barren spell. Alan Franco is set to return after serving suspension. Meanwhile, Moises Caicedo faces a late fitness check. Arsenal’s Piero Hincapie should start at center-back alongside Willian Pacho. Pervis Estupinan and Joel Ordonez operating as full-backs.

Argentina

Argentina will be without Lionel Messi, who has been granted rest after scoring a brace in an emotional farewell home qualifier against Venezuela. Lautaro Martínez is expected to lead the attack in Messi’s absence, supported by a strong lineup. Cristian Romero is suspended

This will pave the way for Leonardo Balerdi to feature in defense. Alexis Mac Allister could return after missing the last game. Argentina are boasting 31 goals in 17 qualifiers and six wins in their last eight meetings with Ecuador. They will now aim to end their campaign on a high.

Ecuador vs Argentina Over/ Under Predictions

Total Goals Over 1.5 @ -160 as per BetMGM:

Argentina arrive in Guayaquil having scored 31 times in their 17-match qualifying campaign. That number is more than any other South American side. Ecuador are defensively robust and conceded just five goals. This is the fewest goals conceded in CONMEBOL qualifiers.

Even so, Ecuador have struggled to find the net, having drawn each of their last four 0-0. Despite Ecuador’s resilience, Argentina’s attacking consistency will likely ensure this clash surpass 1.5 goals, with the visitors expected to edge a clear win.

Ecuador vs Argentina Player Picks

Lautaro Martinez to score anytime @ +230 as per FanDuel:

With Lionel Messi resting, Lautaro Martinez steps into a central attacking role. He scored Argentina’s third goal in their recent 3-0 win against Venezuela. His prolific performance throughout the qualifiers makes him a logical scoring choice. Thus, a supporting value in a +230 to score at anytime a good bet.

Julian Alvarez to either score or assist @ +195 as per FanDuel:

Julian Alvareza consistently plays a creative and threatening role in Argentina’s forward setup. His regular contributions, either by scoring or setting up goals makes him a credible pick to be directly involved offensively against Ecuador. Especially against Ecuador who have struggled in the final third.

Ecuador’s qualification campaign has been built on solid defending. Yet their inability to convert opportunities leaves them vulnerable. Argentina, by contrast, have dominated most qualifiers. They also have a strong confrontation record against Ecuador. They’ve won six of their last eight matchups in regulation time.

Final Prediction: Ecuador 0-2 Argentina

In Messi’s absence, Martinez and Alvarez will likely step up. But Ecuador’s defense may still limit the damage. A 2-0 win for Argentina seems most plausible, a confident finish to their qualifying run.
