Dream vs Sky: Rhyne Howard’s Season-High Outburst Helps Atlanta to Dispatch Angel Reese and Co. in WNBA Commissioner’s Cup

Rhyne Howard’s season-high performance and a career-high 3-pointers guided Atlanta Dream a 88-70 win over Chicago Sky on Friday night. The Dream guard dropped 36 points and nine 3-pointers in the Eastern Conference’s Commissioner’s Cup fixture. Sky dropped their third straight game and fell to 0-3 in the 2025 Commissioner’s Cup play.

Rhyne Howard broke the franchise record for most 3-pointers in a game, surpassing Renee Montgomery (Eight 3s in 2018). During the game, Brittney Griner also moved into second place on the WNBA career blocks list. Griner blocked lizabeth Williams’ shot late in the third quarter to tie with Lisa Leslie (822). She added another in the fourth quarter to take second spot in the list, only behind Margo Dydek (877).

Chicago Sky’s Offensive Struggle Continues, Drops Seventh Game of the Season

Chicago Sky held a 39-38 lead at half time but they failed to stretch it in the second half. Atlanta had a 30-point surge in the final quarter and held Chicago to just 16 points. Atlanta’s Howard went scoreless in the opening quarter. She chipped in 11 points in her team’s 18-3 run in the fourth to take a 79-59 lead.

In the second half, the Dream outscored the Sky 50-31 and secure second straight win in the season. Sky’s horrible form in the second half continues as they have been outscored by total 79 points in seven defeats and won just one quarter out of 14.

Apart from Howard, Allisha Gray contributed 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Dream. Brionna Jones chipped in 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Jordin Canada added 12, including eight assists. Kamilla Cardoso led the Sky with 15 points and nine rebounds. Angel Reese scored 12 points and nine rebounds, and Ariel Atkins had 12.

Chicago Sky will now end their 3-game road trip with a clash against the Sun on Saturday. With a poor start of 2-7, they slipped to the bottom two in the regular-season standings and bottom in the Commissioner’s Cup play. Atlanta Dream will make a trip to Washington for the next WNBA showdown.
