Dominic Calvert-Lewin Set for Leeds Move After Everton Exit

Leeds United are closing in on the signing of Dominic Calvert-Lewin after agreeing terms with the 28-year-old striker. He left Everton as a free agent this summer. The former England international is expected to undergo a medical at the club’s Thorp Arch training ground imminently before finalising his move.

Calvert-Lewin ended his nine-year association with Everton in June. He confirmed his decision to leave the club when his contract expired. During his time at Goodison Park, he scored 71 goals in 274 appearances. He joined them from Sheffield United in 2016 for £1.5 million.

Injuries Hamper Everton Farewell for Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Calvert-Lewin’s most prolific campaign came back in 2020-21. He scored a total of 16 goals in 33 Premier League matches. It also earned him a place in England’s squad for the European Championship, where the team reached the final. However, injuries plagued his later years at Everton.

They kept him sidelined for a combined 529 days since the start of the 2021-22 season. He scored just three goals in 26 appearances last term, missing three months from late January due to fitness setbacks. Despite being offered a new deal on reduced terms, the forward opted to seek a fresh challenge.

Speaking on the matter, Calvert-Lewin wrote on Instagram: “This isn’t something I chose lightly. Everton has been my home since I was 19 years old. It’s the place that saw potential in me, challenged me to grow, and shaped me both as a footballer and as a man.” He described the decision as ‘incredibly difficult’ and thanked both the club and its supporters.

Leeds United Strengthen Ahead of Premier League Return

If the move goes through, Calvert-Lewin will become Leeds’ eighth signing of the summer as Daniel Farke’s side prepares for life back in the Premier League after winning the Championship. The club has already bolstered its attacking options.

They’ve brought in Lukas Nmecha from Wolfsburg, while Joel Piroe remains a key figure up front. Patrick Bamford has been told he is not in the manager’s plans, and young striker Mateo Joseph has joined Mallorca on loan.

Leeds are set to face Calvert-Lewin’s former club Everton in their opening match of the season on Monday night. This would certainly add extra intrigue to the striker’s anticipated debut. The Yorkshire outfit is banking on his experience and finishing ability to help ensure a strong start in their top-flight return.
