Does Dallas Want To Retain Micah Parsons? – Latest Update Casts Serious Doubt

Forget being close, Cowboys haven't even initiated talks for Parsons' extension!

With training camp underway for NFL teams, there’s plenty happening both on and off the field as players, coaches, team executives, and owners gear up for the season ahead.

During a media session at the Dallas Cowboys training camp, team owner Jerry Jones gave an update on the contract situation of Micah Parsons, one that may rub their fan base the wrong way.

Jerry Jones’ Harsh Reality Regarding Parsons Contract

Jones, who is known to stir up plenty of controversies in his press conferences and interviews, was at it again during the opening day of the Cowboys’ training camp.

Always one to not hold back and speak his mind, the franchise owner offered his justification on why a deal with Parsons has not been done yet. However, in the process of doing so, he even called out Dak Prescott after making him the highest-paid player in the league.

“Just because we signed him doesn’t mean we are gonna have him. He was hurt six games last year. I remember signing a player for the highest paid at the position in the league, and he got knocked out two-thirds of the year, Dak Prescott. So there are a lot of things you need to think about, just as the player does, when you’re thinking about commitment, guarantee, and money.”

Of course, when you have a player of the quality of Parsons, who is widely considered as one of the top players in his position, if not the very best, such opinions are not going to sit well with the public.

Further Insight on Parsons Contract Talks

The contract story, however, gets more interesting as NFL insider Adam Schefter shared further insight when he spoke on the matter on ESPN’s ‘First Take’. Schefter spoke at length as he put forth the point that contract talks have not even started with Parsons.

All this while, the football community is of the opinion that there is a contractual standoff between the team and Parsons, while Schefter’s latest input seems to suggest that nothing of that sort is even remotely true.

“For all the talk we have had about Micah (Parsons), and the contract, and how close they are or aren’t, they’re not close. They haven’t started. There’s been no negotiations. So, at some point this summer, everybody’s expecting and waiting for that deal to get done, but they’re not getting a deal done until they can start talks and come up with offers, and there have been no offers exchanged so far.”

Upon hearing this piece of information from one of the most connected personalities in the NFL, and after what Jerry Jones had to say yesterday at the press conference, Cowboys fans may be starting to feel even more restless.

On a sidenote, though, when Parsons himself was asked for his comments on what Jones said to the media, the All-Pro defensive end made it clear that he is showing up to training camp to support his teammates, and not for anybody else. That said, it is also important to note that while Parsons did attend training camp, he did not partake in on-field activities.

In the end, the situation with regard to Parsons’ contract extension shows no further progress. Exactly how this will take shape as we near the start of the new season is anyone’s guess. However, if Dallas does let Parsons walk, it could very well be one of the most hated decisions in franchise history.
