De’Anthony Melton injury: Warriors guard to undergo season-ending ACL surgery

Gulshan Sharma

De'Anthony Melton had an ACL sprain during the Warriors' 120–117 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Nov. 12.

The Golden State Warriors suffered a huge blow in the backcourt as their main player De’Anthony Melton will be sidelined for the rest of the 2024-25 NBA season. Playing his first season with the Warriors, Melton managed to play just six games.

Melton was reported an ACL sprain during the Warriors’ 120–117 victory against the Dallas Mavericks on November 12. He scored 14 points on 6-12 field shooting and snatched a clutch steal against Luka Doncic. The veteran guard has not played since and will be out for the remainder of the season.

Golden State announced Wednesday evening that Melton will require season-ending surgery. They issued a statement via social media platform ‘X’, “De’Anthony Melton, who has missed the last two games due to a sprained left ACL, underwent further testing to determine the extent of the injury. The tests indicated that it is in De’Anthony’s best interest to proceed with ACL surgery. He is scheduled for surgery in the near future and will miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season.”

A blow to Warriors starters and Steve Kerr

De’Anthony Melton is playing his first season with the Warriors after signing a one-year deal worth $12.82 million. The former 76ers guard is averaging 10.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists across 20.2 minutes per contest. He has recorded more than one steal per game in each year of his career.

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr will surely miss him in the 2024-25. “I feel so bad for De’Anthony,” Kerr said. “He was such a perfect fit for us. We were so excited to have him. He was clearly going to be our starter next to Steph. Good news is, he’s a young guy, and the surgery is pretty routine these days. He should be able to come back and resume his career very well. I feel awful for him and bad for us too.”

Melton’s absence will affect the roaster of the Golden State Warriors. He has helped out Stephen Curry and Draymond Green in the early games. We saw how the Warriors struggled to control the ball against the Clippers and eventually lost the game. Melton led the Warriors starters with a 14.4 on-court plus-minus per 100 possessions and tied with Curry at 6.2 on-off plus-minus per 100 possessions (Data taken from Basketball Reference).
