Spurs commit to Fox long-term as front office signals playoff intentions with bold extension decision
The San Antonio Spurs have locked in De’Aaron Fox under a new contract that runs until 2030. The front office has been firm with all their moves and are now moving towards win-now mode.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reports De’Aaron Fox has agreed to a four-year, $229 million max contract extension. The deal nets him an average salary of $55 million per year. This is a massive increase from his current designated rookie extension deal.

Fox earlier signed a five-year, $163 million contract with the Sacramento Kings before demanding a trade. He made an average salary of $32.6 million during that contract. With one year left on his deal, Fox requested a trade away from Sacramento earlier this year.
He forced his way out early this year and agreed to move to Texas’s San Antonio. With the 27-year-old committed, the Spurs’ front office can breathe a sigh of relief. They are one of the most promising young teams in the Western Conference.
De’Aaron Fox’s max contract has sparked widespread reactions across the NBA community. Some NBA analysts such as Kevin O’Connor are unhappy with the max contract and believe that the San Antonio Spurs’ front office overpaid.
I don’t love this for the Spurs. Fox is not a max level point guard on any team, and in San Antonio he has overlapping skills with Castle and Harper. https://t.co/axfeITihhl

Kevin O’Connor said, “I don’t love this for the Spurs. Fox is not a max-level point guard on any team, and in San Antonio, he has overlapping skills with Castle and Harper.”
De’Aaron Fox averaged 23.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 6.3 assists last season. He is entering into his prime years and these numbers are likely to shoot up. Especially, as Victor Wembanyama will return after suffering an injury last season.
The Fox-Wembanyama partnership could define the future success of the San Antonio Spurs in the West. Together, they could form a lethal pick-and-roll combo next season. With Dylan Harper and others rising, the Spurs appear well-positioned for a bright future.
